Kane's statement is most telling in the parts it doesn't say. It's very weasel-y/lawyer-y in that respect (no offence to any weasels reading this).

Says: "I have never refused to train"
Doesn't say: "I said I was going to come back a week late and Daniel could do one if he didn't like it"

Says: "I wouldn't do anything to jeopardise my relationship with the fans"

Doesn't say: "I wouldn't do anything to jeopardise my relationship with the club"

Doesn't say "I am willing to play for Spurs again"

Doesn't say "I am proud to be Spurs player"

Doesn't say "I am proud to have been Spurs player"

He must think we're all total idiots not to be able to see through this BS.

Given Kane won't, this is our current understanding of "the specifics of the situation" pieced together from various sources.
  • Kane told the club he wanted an extra week off (4 rather than 3). We'd heard this a while ago from Herc and others.
  • The club refused and expected him back training last week.
  • Kane took the extra week anyway and will face internal disciplinary stuff over it.
  • Kane's side have been telling everyone (e.g. at the infamous wedding, etc) that he'd move to City for £160m.
  • Neither the club nor Man City had any idea where this figure came from. It's more than City would pay in cash and it's less than we'd want in cash.
  • The club feels this was Kane's attempt to "get the ball rolling" in terms of negitations.
  • Some sources say this might have worked and Man City may put together a player+cash deal that we'd accept, other sources are saying it's dead (especially with Grealish now done). All we know for sure is that the club is pissed off with him.
  • After all the negative press (and anger from the club directed at him), Charlie's realised he's massively out of his depth.
  • Kane's now back-tracking, ignoring all his attempts at engineering a move and is claiming it was just an extra week's holiday (which from his point of view is maybe even true).
That's the most plausible explanation I've read so far. Many thanks.

A mate of mine nailed it on that statement. He opened up talking about how he was hurt and disappointed with the reaction. How self centred is that?

The ego on this guy is something else. No wonder he was ready to drop the club at a minutes notice. His reaction is less 'oh maybe I fucked up' and more 'how dare anyone question me and talk shit about me'.

I genuinely felt for him. I was desperate for us to get over the line in the Carabao or England in the Euros. For him as much as myself even. I wanted him to have that moment in the sun. I was so pleased when he scored against Germany as I knew the pressure was under. I've spent years defending the guy.

The reality is he probably deserves to be at a more competitive club right now, the last two seasons have been awful. I don't think any of us would begrudge him too much if it was similar to the Grealish situation and they paid top whack. His actions were solely to screw the club out of fair value so he could get what he wants. He didn't even contemplate that.

I sympathise with him if he wants the move, but you have to accept its got to be on terms that suit all parties.

You binned your own legacy off H, it'll take a lot more than that statement to claw even a small part of that back, it clearly wasn't that important to you anyway...

It's so obvious he's been trying to force a move. There's been so many leaks to the press and they've all come true.

I'm glad someone finally listed all the pieces thus far. Makes it easier to digest and read through. Cheers Rob.

The facts speak for themselves.

His actions mean that he WON'T make the first game of the season, which happens to vs the team he wants to move to.

The last bullet point from rob is the most interesting because I can see from Kane's perspective why he thinks it's been blown out of proportion but it clearly shows a huge sense of entitlement and a complete misunderstanding of what you're allowed to dictate and he needs it basically explained to him how it's a breach of professionalism, he needs to see what a mistake it is.

Dav Sanchez obviously didn't get the memo to not like the statement on insta?

Only current squad player who has.

As I pointed out Harry is in for a huge awakening when he does return. He may have been able to get around Levy before but he will struggle with Nuno and Fabio now effectively running the show. Daniel needs to make it quite clear to Mr Kane that all such matters no longer initially come under his control.
To use a wonderful English expression (I love them) "You don't buy a dog and bark yourself".

Incredibly disappointed in Kane’s statement & I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling completely let down.

We’ve probably all spent years (rightly or wrongly) blindly defending him online and to our mates and then as soon as the going gets tough he decides he wants to jump ship.

Honestly, that wouldn’t even be an issue for me or a lot of us fans as I understand his love for the club will be exaggerated in the media due to the narrative him being a ‘fan’ creates, but to pull stunts like this is such a potentially disappointing end.

To try and fuck the club over, force your way out before the end of season and lie to the press is a disgrace and I think for a lot of people who have spent years fighting his battles for him, there is no way back.

Nuno said the the club would deal with the issue internally, which suggests that there was no agreement from the hierarchy that he could delay his return.
That means Harry is spouting bollocks in order to look good on the media front - after all, he’s England captain, and won’t want a tainted reputation.
Precisely. If it was a mutual agreement that he take an extra week, then Nuno would have said as much on Wednesday. Instead he referred to it being an ‘internal matter’. No one would say that if all parties has agreed that he could take extra time off. So, it makes his statement disingenuous.

Like everyone else, i'm suspicious about the statement because it took so long and the situation was allowed to fester. Spurs have never really been rapidly reactionary with media stories so a bit of ineptitude isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

BUT.........I said at the start, there's things we don't know and it was totally at odds with how he's always conducted himself. Could this all be a load of whitewash? Absolutely. But it could also be genuine. It could, that's all, i'm not totally writing that possibility off.

If he turns round now and says he's staying, that's all I give a fuck about. He's returning to training. That's a start. If people want to hate him, fill your boots but i'm never going to, even if I don't like what he's doing, the bloke is a legend.

You watch, now something will come out that makes my faith in him totally misplaced

Sorry for sticking up for him :D
That's what friends are for(y)

God knows why, but this popped up on my YouTube feed.

Grealish shows genuine surprise and delight when he finds out he’s been given the number 10 shirt - I wonder if it was a late decision from City realising Kane wasn’t happening??

Try not to vomit if you decide to watch it! ?

For all Jack’s dodgy leisure suit, he comes over as a polite lad.

After a week in the spare room and "If you think I want to live in fucking Manchester you can think again. I'm not a trophy wife and the little noisy things aren't medals. You're sleeping alone, you're sleeping alone, Harry Kane you're sleeping alone." Harry Kane has decided to return to Tottenham Hotspur.
