Paul the coke Merson on his sky channel: “you take Kane out of the team, top four ain't happening for Spurs. It's as simple as that. When he doesn't turn up at Burnley away, they get beaten. Tottenham are a one-man team and that's not being disrespectful.

You could have a Ferrari, but without an engine in the car it ain't working. He's the all-round package, and that's why he's the best centre-forward in the world, and I've said it for a long, long time.”
What an arse
Say that about every team but city. Even Liverpool struggled last season without Van Dyke.

It’s all about applying pressure-he believes he has some influence.

He’s a knob-nosed ijit… and I don’t get why he’s a pundit tbh. I suppose sky need the hits, and Merse is sure to get them

Certain he’s only employed as they know when they fire him he’ll hit the sauce etc and spiral quickly. Employed mostly as a sympathy case

Probably gonna get pelters but I’m not sure there’s a lot wrong with what Merson said tbh.
Even with Kane playing at absolute ridiculous levels for most of the season we’re only in with a slight shout of CL, is it that crazy to suggest that without him we’d be well off the pace? I don’t think so.

Merson is a complete numpty who normally spews complete hogwash, but I don’t think this is one of those times.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we’re proper fucked if Kane leaves imo.

He's an awesome player of course but let's remember he didn't show up for the first what...10 games?

Nah, you're completely disregarding the Conte effect and how long it has taken to start settling, which coincided with the arrival of Kulusevski, Bentancour and the return of fitness of both Romero and Dier. That without mentioning the impact Son has had through out the season, and Doherty returning to his best days.

Sure Kane is an integral part of our system, but we would find a way to cope without him... we usually have done so since he became a world class star.

Can’t help but feel this is incredibly optimistic, even naive mate.
Regardless of he Conte effect, we would be weaker without Kane, I dont see how anyone can argue otherwise....and if we’re weaker we wouldn’t be in with a shout of CL, that’s my point.

People have been saying that for ages, however we've shown before that we win games without him. We beat City without him and Nuno in charge

I think we're in with more than a 'slight chance' but even agreeing with that...that's because of Nuno.

Had Conte be in from the start we would of strolled it.

And we've previously coped well without Kane.

I take so much exception to the whole 'if you didnt have x you wont win etc' to the point where if someone said that to me id shoot them in the dick then feed them the remnants

Ok firstly, if you take Kane out - who are we replacing him with? Mbappe? Lewandowski? Haaland? Benzema? or are we playing with 10 men?

Secondly, isnt that the point of having good players? so they can unlock defences and score goals and contribute to winning?

Thirdly, we should start shooting these people in the dick

If Kane gets injured now we are screwed. If Kane leaves in the summer but Conte stays we will be fine.

I’d take Conte over Kane if I have to choose. He turned Lukaku into a world beater which he wasn’t before or since.

he has improved every player at the club and some dramatically. In any case they will both stay this summer and if we get fourth and rebuild we most certainly won’t be a one man team next season

Of which, we lost five? So, not great without him and/or a half-assed version. Let's be honest, we would be nowhere near top 4 if he wasn't still here and playing as he is. Merson is 100% right. Btw, I have a lot of time for Merson knowing what he is battling with everyday. Back on topic, yes, others are important and making big contributions, but he (Kane) is far and away our most important player. Anyway, now looks as though we have the opportunity to challenge again. We were in the same position quite recently. Let's see if the necessary incomings arrive this time over the Summer, and that Kane stays. Both are vital imo.

Kane is ofcourse an integral part of our team but you say if Kane wasnt here we wouldnt be top four - unless we are playign with 10 men, who are you proposing Kane would have been replaced by for that conclusion? Yeah they may not be better than Kane ofcourse they wont but we would be buying two or three players with that cash strengthening the squad and the team.

Lets also not forget the Nuno factor - negative as fuck he was. If we had Nuno now, we wouldnt be anywhere near top four.

I assume it would have been that bloke who is now at Juve? As good as he looks, would you back him or anyone else to come in and do what Kane is putting up in goals, assists and all-round play? If it had been two or three, which I agree is probably what we will need to replace him when that day comes, that's even more of a risk. Would we have identified the right players? Would they come? Would they settle? How long? Etc.
