Defensive Midfielder- Who should we look to?

United killed us through the middle at OT and Liverpool overran us at Anfield. They were bad games for Mason and Bentaleb, but examples of where a more defence focused DM would be handy.

Incidentally, it was when Bentaleb was given the task of marking Fellani that the goals stopped.

3 will always beat 2 no matter who they are.

To be honest I can see why we have waited to sign a centre midfielder. Poch will want to assess what he has first with Carroll, Winks, Onomah and Alli all relatively new to the first team. We need players to compete alongside Bentaleb and Mason. We are in no rush to go out and sign someone. I'd happily wait until pre-season is finished and Poch has decided if these young players are worth trying out rather than splashing cash to prevent any of our promising youngsters from getting a chance.

True, but I think you can work it with a 4231. You just need the n.10 to be playing deeper.

So:

New DM Bentaleb

Mason
Lamela Eriksen
Kane

With a more defensive and energetic n.10 you will not see the midfield over run.

This is where Poch flounders, he has the perfect defensive no10 in Dembele

Agreed, it is an issue. But he was playing with a set hand last season. He has a chance to plug those gaps with players he will trust in those games.

Why do people suddenly get this mason is the weaker of the two both had good and bad games, both will be better next year.
I would say there isn't too much in it and agree both had good and bad games but I think most of us can see Bentaleb has more quality especially given he is 3/4 years younger also!

Really don't get why Potch doesn't rate Dembele. Our best run of form was with him in the team and as soon as he dropped him for no real reason our form dipped. He's a class player and were missing a trick overlooking him!

But where they two games where needed to make it a midfield 3?

Yes especially when Eriksen coasts through games and doesn't put a shift in it makes Mason and Bentalebs jobs very difficult against a decent midfield 3.

Could Alli, Mason and Bentaleb be turned in to a Raptor squad to hunt out the op CMs where ever they stray?

probably because he doesn't run around like a lapdog in training.

In time I think so but then what to do with Eriksen?

I do like tthe prospect of Alli - Bentaleb - Mason midfield trio. Plenty of energy, legs, and determination with a bit of creativity too. Just no experience so maybe add Dembele to the mix for now.

I don't think a defensive midfielder is what we need, more like a box to box midfielder. Schneiderlin was ideal, great tracking back, reads situations well but also will get forward and join in with the attack. We need an athlete with intelligence in there.

IMO. The player we should have brought, was Johannes Geis, was sold for less than 11mil, had all the quality we needed.

I find it so strange people just dismiss Mason as if he's not good enough and is liability...Yes Bentaleb probably showed more overall last season but there were many games where Mason was the better.

Together I thought both did extremely well with a shambles of a defence behind them...and a difficult demanding system.

More of ten than not, the 'shambles of a defence' was a direct result of what was going on in front of them, namely Mason and Bentaleb, not having the defensive intuition to be in the right place, track their runners, make their tackles or fill the admittedly huge area they were expected to control. To play 2 in CM they need a lot more experience and arguably ability than these 2.

We've got one in Bentaleb. He's been restricted by having to play with Mason, who was the more attacking of the two, but put a more defensive player alongside him and I think Bentaleb can be a great box to box player for us.

But not as a CM it wasn't.

how do we know pochettino actually wants one? to me everything seems to suggest that he prefers centre mids who are comfortable going both ways, rather than having a clearly defined holder alongside a more forward thinking player. i don't know what's going on with stambouli as i haven't really been following but is there no chance rabiot ends up being part of the deal?

I think this is very much the case. None of the players we have seemed to be interested in have been pure one dimensional DM's.

The cm2 is the problem.

I think someone like Kondogbia, Schniederlin, Rabiot or Kramer would/could have improved the group but as MP says, if Pochettino gets the whole team better organised defensively as a group and stops either picking players who are counter intuitive to this or at least letting them get away with it when they are not, then I think we have CM's who already managed 5th in a season of transitional chaos whilst having their first full seasons, and should improve individually for that experience and collectively if Pochettino can do his job better and get the team working more cohesively without the ball and when we lose the ball.
