Have we ever had a player out 'scared of playing' before?

Incredibly insensitive I'm aware, but the bloke is stealing a living now

He said in his own words Saturday, he hopes to be playing soon.
In sure he really wants to be out there with the team

Seems to be ok training everyday. Is it really that much of leap.I mean it’s not like he’s sat on his sofa in his PJs watching re runs of the xfactor.

As Poch has said, the coaching and medical teams feel he's ready, but Lamela himself is not convinced he is 100%.

2 ways to interpret that, and neither are overly positive imo.

Dock his wages till he plays then.

I’m sorry but taking the piss otherwise.

I trust you're in the know in regards to his mental state, for all we know there could be a deeper problem there.

I'd go as far as to say it's been strongly implied there's issues with his mental state. And disciplining employees because of their mental health issues is (rightly) illegal and in any case pretty reprehensible. For all their wealth footballers are still human beings, and when they're struggling through no fault of their own is when we most need to support them. And apart from anything else, I don't see how adding a massive slice of pressure to Lamela is actually going to help the situation at all - it's a knee-jerk response borne out of (understandable) frustration.

There’s no way Poch patience will last on this. May have been more lenient because he’s an Argie. But I’d say if not back playing to decent standards by January he will be out the door.

Who exactly do we reckon would want to buy a player who hadn't played in 15 months and was mentally unfit?! That'd be stupid even by West Ham standards.

Completely understandable and nothing to worry about IMO, gonna need to have quite a few kickabouts after a year out to regain confidence in body.

A player that is scared to get hurt again will not be 100% committed. I don't see a place for that in a Poch set up personally.

I'm a big fan of Lamela but unless things change soon I see his future elsewhere. Hope I'm wrong.

Do you not agree though that if he had a genuine mental health issue he would be signed off work?

As in not fit to train ( which is a big part of his job). Instead he’s training fine, but just doesn’t seem to want to play.

I have sympathy for him, but if that continues then it’s hard not to take the view that it’s taking the piss a bit imo.

Thank heavens you aren't his nurse then Steve.

He clearly has multiple issues, one caused by physical injury the club has been very poor at addressing. Emotional issues deeply inter-related, his brothers issues...

The club has been this way, IMO, because they are rigidly rejecting the notion that he could become unwell due to an excessively intense training regime, which leaves players prone to excessive acidic metabolic residues in tissue/joints. That same regime will also induce additional impact injuries as the players are told they must 'bring it' in training. What happens if you need outstanding electromagnetic traction in you circadian rhythm to cleanse and repair, but you then take knocks which damage your lymph and hamper the bodies ability to cycle waste out? Not rocket science is it? Explains how 'minor knocks' to Rose, Lamela now Wanyama turn into long term conditions, no?

To continually apportion blame towards Lamela like this (as Poch has repeatedly done in pressers), is surely akin to constructive dismissal and/or disability discrimination. Does anybody really believe he is 'stealing a living'? This suggests dishonesty and is pathetic IMO, my belief is that he probably only feels complete as a person when fit and playing, so wants nothing more than to recover completely.

Tough one this Lamela saga, hopefully we'll get to see him play for us again. I'm not his biggest fan but it must be really hard on players when they've been out injured for so long. Also the more options we have the better imo
