The signs of Timo Werner's move back to the Premier League are increasing - now even Mario Gomez, technical director at Red Bull Football/Soccer, has confirmed the 27-year-old's upcoming loan to Tottenham Hotspur and described it as a "win-win for all". "Germany benefits from it. We benefit from it because we get a player going. He will play regularly, that's what Tottenham told us," Gomez explained to "Sport1". Werner wants to recommend himself to the Spurs for the home European Championship, in the Bundesliga he only played twice from the start in the first half of the season under coach Marco Rose.

Small bit in Athletic this morning. Fairly balanced piece hard to disagree with any of it really

When Timo Werner’s loan move goes through, probably at some point this week, the Chelsea forward line from the 2021 Champions League final will play for Manchester United, Arsenal and Spurs.

For Tottenham’s sake, they will hope Werner’s transfer turns out a little better than Kai Havertz’s and Mason Mount’s.

It’s understandable that some Spurs fans out there have convinced themselves that this could be a great deal for them. After all, Ange Postecoglou has managed to get a tune out of Giovani Lo Celso this season, something that four of his permanent predecessors struggled to do regularly: if he can do that, then why not Werner, too?

In theory, he fits with what Postecoglou needs quite nicely: he’s quick, dynamic, able to play off the left or through the middle. On paper, his qualities complement Tottenham’s other forwards well.

The justification is also that this is a risk-free transfer, which from a certain perspective it is: this is a loan until the end of the season with relatively minimal initial cost. If it doesn’t go well, no problem, it won’t have cost them much. If it does go well, they have the option of making the move permanent for a relatively modest fee.

On the other hand, Werner is actually going to have to play for Tottenham, which is where the risk comes in.

He has, it’s fair to say, not been good for a little while. Arguably, in fact, since his first spell at RB Leipzig. Maybe it’s harsh to call him a disaster at Chelsea, but he was at the very least extremely disappointing, struggling with the admittedly tricky business of finishing chances on the occasions when he managed to stay onside, which was a constant frustration.

He did score a few in the first half of last season, his first back in Leipzig, but he tailed off after the German winter break and this season he hasn’t been a factor at all, rarely even starting for them. Admittedly this is at least in part because the form of Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko hasn’t left many opportunities for him, but by all accounts, he hasn’t exactly presented a compelling case to dislodge either of them.

Tottenham could do with some goals while Son Heung-min is away at the Asian Cup but when he gets back, too. Richarlison has improved but still isn’t a prolific finisher, nor is Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson only has one goal since joining in the summer.

Werner could prove to be an astute piece of business, but he’s not risk-free either

I really hope Ange can work a coaching miracle and get Werner playing like he did 4/5 years ago.

The odds are heavily against him as Werner has zero confidence left and hasn’t performed well for years now.

I think an important goal against Utd or Brentford early on in his career here plus Ange motivational speeches could be pivotal. If Werner misses a big chance against Utd etc then he could spiral downwards as he’s so fragile confidence wise.

Hopefully his pressing and pace can help energise our attack and give us fresh impetus for the second half of the season.

If Ange gets him back to confidence and form then he really is an incredible coach, even more so than I already believe.

There's a lot that article misses though isn't there? Mount and Havertz, for example, moved clubs for extortionate fees that pretty much no one thought they justified. So, the pressure was on them straight away to live up to the billing...

The Shed End... even they hate him

Rory Jennings has made a hate filled rant about " Judas" Timo going to Spurs on his YouTube channel, and at the same time saying he was so bad he would get in a worst ever Chelsea eleven.

What a dick

Lol. Rory Jennings must be very young. I have no idea who he sucked off to get the small amount of fame he has, but he has TOWIE-esque levels of intelligence.

Until our links to buying Werner, I’d never heard of Rory Jennings.

Who is he and why do care enough him to ridicule him?

Just watch his Haaland prediction and then ignore him moving forward. The guy is where he us because of these ridiculous predictions which get people's backs up and when people talk, he laps it up. Randomly plucking out that he won't score more than 5 goals is just madness 🤣. If Ange can work wonders with him (and there genuinely aren't many in the World I'd rather when it comes to motivating a player), it will literally only take a couple of goals and the prediction will look laughable. When he has the likes of Johnson and Son supplying him with their pace and his, we could be frightening. It's a huge risk, of course it is. But it's a low risk one and one I'm massively intrigued about.

No fan of Werner but can’t be likened to Havertz as we are not stuck with paying £65m and needing to force him in to the team to justify it.
If we’re going to liken him to anyone before he even puts on the Spurs kit then let’s at least go with Salah or De Bruyne - we could have just landed one of the leagues best ever players after he was a former Chelsea reject.

We shouldn't! He's just another youtube gobshite who is controversial enough on his podcasts to have been given a job at Talksport riling other morons up enough to phone in. Anybody getting upset by him needs to take a long hard look at themselves imo, it's obvious to anyone who knows anything about the game that he knows very little.

Does anyone remember a certain Mr Conte freezing Bassouma out of his squad and a Mr Mourinho playing Son as a bit part player to suit Kane more?

AP sees a great deal of opportunity in Werner that he can squeeze out of him or quite simply he’d not be on his list of targets.
He’ll be mustard, I firmly believe that and suits the clubs team ethics and principles

But Salah and De Bruyne were smashing it at their new times before coming back to the premier league. Werner struggles to start 😞

The same Rory Jennings who said Harland wouldn't score 15 goals in his first season.

Correct. First time I ever heard this guy on the radio he was waxing lyrical about a silky midfielder saying he could do it all and was a world class talent coming in off the left who was was under appreciated. I thought he was talking about a historic player like Iniesta and when he got to the end he was speaking about Mason Mount. Knob

Conte didn’t want Bass in the first team? Son to play to fit how Mourinho wanted spurs to play around Kane?
Maybe i didn’t explain it how I just did but this happened.
No I'm not being sarcastic.

Conte never froze Bissouma out, he played most games when he wasn't injured/coming back from injury. Did he use him well? Nope, but that's a different issue altogether.

If Jennings thinks Werner could get into Chelsea's worst ever team, Jennings clearly doesn't remember the period from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s. One season in the early '80s, they were in the old Division 2 and finished 1 place and 1 or 2 points above the relegation zone.
