1 just have 1 issue and that is the front 3 that started the game are more runners than dribblers. It's built for a counter attacking conte or mourinho team

But them I keep reading that Ange wants that profile of wingers and its confusing me!

I’m disappointed but taking it in context. The previous victories have on the whole been far less deserved than us getting anything out of today.
Lots of positives in terms of defence and learnings against the very top teams.
I’m feeling like the foundations are strong and we only need some confident direct transition mobility in a new player to give us the final option of not always playing back and forth at the back to find the space.
I feel that variety when we get it (Nusa etc) will make us less predictable. Sad but optimistic.

We also overplay which invites pressure and cause mistakes . Also creates an uncertainty in attack need to be more instinctive and fluid in attacking transitions it will come just needs coaching and time

Good riddance to the Cup, but that was an embarrassment of a game. Had that Bobb goal been awarded, it would probably finish 0-5. For all his achievements, Ange is too stubborn and inflexible for his own good. Time for a tactical re-think? Not all games and opponents can be approached the same way. And the Bentancur sub was suicidal.

Bentancur was clearly struggling physically with the pace of the game. He wasn't himself all night.

Against the top teams our midfield currently isn't good enough.

Do we win tonight with Sarr or Biss? Maybe.

But either way I don't think a top club should be going in to games like this with the likes of PEH in the starting XI.

That sounds harsh on him and he tries hard and wasn't solely to blame at all today. But he isn't good enough and we need midfielders who can pass the ball.
This is our first loss against the traditional top 6 this season, when we haven't been down to 9 men.

The entire midfield that had us top of the league after 10 games couldn't start today. Add Lo Celso in to that and you have 4 of our 5 best centre midfielders unavailable for the starting lineup. The 5th has completed one 90 min game in the last twelve months.

Every club would struggle in that position, if that happened to Arsenal they would have to play something like Vieira, El Neny and Jorginho as a midfield three.

I said at half time I didn’t realise Bemtancour was playing. One of his most anonymous performances for us.

We just came up short against one of the best sides in the world just shows where we need to be.

"Where we need to be" is a starting eleven including a fully fit Madders, with Sarr, Bissouma and Son as options.

Losing to a full strength treble winning side without the option of the aforementioned players is no easy task.

A replica of the loss against City in the League Cup. City score in 88th minute from a corner. I think it is a foul on Vic. Diaz is jumping into him not jumping for ball. Having said that if the opposition is putting a man on the GK then somebody has to help the GK out. It happened all game so it’s really poor from us that we left Vic without help.
City were the better team so the result is not unfair but the method it was achieved leaves a little bit of a sour taste.

You'd better get used to it, because Ange has never compromised on playing out from the back, so far as I'm aware.
That’s all well and good but with only 5 minutes left, 0-0, under pressure and tiring players I don’t think it a bad idea to just clear your lines and reset. Sometimes you just have to be practical.

The one telling thing (that hinted at a poor performance tonight) was that we couldn’t turn over any possession when pressing them.

we usually can. or at least force some mistakes.

deki isn’t great at pressing cos he can’t sprint that fast.
bentacur was physically out of sorts - esp if compared to how well he pressed them previously.
BJ n Timo pressed to cut off passing lanes but didn’t force any mistakes or win the ball

and I think the above in the first 20 mins set the tone for the game.

opponents now can see that if they can get out of the defensive third and have a good passer in midfield, they can release high and wide and put us under pressure and make our midfielders less inclined to press high and then have to sprint back

One final, interesting (?), point about the goal. Since the winter break both Arsenal have began interfering with the GK at corners and both have scored goals at them where it could be argued there was a foul on the GK. This is not a tactic they’ve been known to use before.

During the winter break did The Premier League decide to declare open season on goalkeepers but forgot to inform anyone other than City and Arsenal🥹?

We were very, very passive and the result was a reflection of our play. That being said, it’s quite something when you can substitute in KDB and Doku, win the game and still be missing Haaland.

FFP may finally do for City one day but the millions they have poured into their squad both in fees and wages was on full display. It really is the human equivalent of using steroids and the the squad they have is still on another level.

Unless it’s at Spurs expense I feel nothing when City win, as to me it is meaningless when you effectively cook the books to win. I am sure City fans don’t give a cobblers but for me it’s endless hollow victories.

I just hope the groundwork we are laying finally pays off as the victory will be genuinely uplifting and finally done with zero mention of FFP.
