Good riddance to the Cup, but that was an embarrassment of a game. Had that Bobb goal been awarded, it would probably finish 0-5. For all his achievements, Ange is too stubborn and inflexible for his own good. Time for a tactical re-think? Not all games and opponents can be approached the same way. And the Bentancur sub was suicidal.

Silva committed four or five fouls in the first half alone. After a few, he fouled one of ours by pulling him back cynically after he'd gone past him. The ref then called him and Walker over and gave a "final warning" for his first yellow card if he did it again.

Should have been a straight yellow, I have no idea why he's allowed several chances and even then given a warning.

Just flagrant misapplication of the rules simple because it's City. He should have been off the pitch by then, not allowed to commit several yellow fouls.
I'm of the opinion that any tactical foul should always be yellow, no warnings, no leeway, no matter where in the pitch. It needs stamping out of the game.
Yes I know we do it, every club does it, but that's because the officials let it slide so often. I have no idea why it's been allowed to get to this point.

Paul Tierney is a truly bad referee, no bias or hints of corruption from me, he's just bad at his job. it's sad that he's been allowed to get to the level he has.

This is our first loss against the traditional top 6 this season, when we haven't been down to 9 men.

The entire midfield that had us top of the league after 10 games couldn't start today. Add Lo Celso in to that and you have 4 of our 5 best centre midfielders unavailable for the starting lineup. The 5th has completed one 90 min game in the last twelve months.

Every club would struggle in that position, if that happened to Arsenal they would have to play something like Vieira, El Neny and Jorginho as a midfield three.
This. AND we need to sign 1-2 more in that position never mind how many we had missing.

It’s a quality gap but we will get there.

He sticks the knife into Ange whenever he can mate. He was furious when we appointed him IIRC.

They were better than us and 0-1 is fair. The difference apart from the foul for their goal was much more accuracy in their passing and Rodrigo. He’s a dirty cheating bastard but in a completely different class as a player to Holjbjerg.
Ironically I thought Holjbjerg had a very good game albeit a couple of bad passes In the latter stages.
Werner gets into very positions and we need to find him quicker was the other obvious take from that game.

Difficult game to assess seeing as we had key mids/attackers missing and some returnees looked rusty as they had lacked game time. We were up against the best club side in the world, and Pep had them motivated. The biggest positive was that it was an excellent defensive performance overall. We gave them very few clear looks despite being dominated for most of the game.

Can't wait for the international tournaments to finish.

Not at all a bad result?

Since when was going out of a cup at home with one shot all night not a bad result?
Considering we were playing the treble winners and missing our most influential players I would say it wasn’t a bad result. A freak/weak goal beat us and our lack of forward play. But hey you’re entitled to you opinion

Strangely looking forward to playing them again in the league in a few months.

Hopefully we can choose our strongest 11.

Still feeling a bit flat after last night. losing against city isn't exactly end of world but it's always shit when we lose after not giving a decent account of ourselves. We were poor in midfield and up front (except Richy who did as much as he could and have to acknowledge Werner made runs but wasn't picked out).
Just shit that it's another season where we won't win anything and two very poor performances cost in the cups were we didn't do ourselves justice.
Agree, but at least we went out to Premier league teams this time. One on penos and one to City.

I thought City were really up for it last night and actually looked like a CL winning side.

We were good enough to keep it respectable and be competitive, but no more than that, which is probably a fair reflection of where we are with a new manager and a new way of playing.

Still really fucking annoying though!

Anybody else think that poznan thing that the great oil-washed do, where they turn their backs and jump up and down like nine year olds is just scrotum-clenchingly embarrassing?

Personally thought City looked right back to their best yesterday and think they will now go on their usual '2nd half of season' run and win the title. While we definitely didn't play quite as well as i think we could have done, i don't think we played at all badly in the context of City simply being a better team than us - they are the best team in the world and have all the current trophies to prove it.

I'd have liked to have got a replay as i think we'd have been better in a few weeks time, but logic does suggest we'd probably have lost then as well - this was the worst draw possible and came at the worst time really, they weren't playing quite this well a few weeks ago and may well have rotated more in a few weeks time given CL commitments.

It is what it is though, a reminder that we've made great strides this season and we can definitely give the best teams in the country a tough game, but ultimately we are at the start of a journey and most of the better clubs are a long way into theirs.

I still think we'll finish top 3 or 4 (injuries permitting) this season and that we'll be proper challengers for everything next season so not having any doom and gloom after last night !

I think a fully fit and available XI more than matches City. We saw at the Etihad what we can do and I'm still positive for the future.

Have to say, regardless of everything, my god city’s pressing was insane, I’ve never seen anything like it. We just got dominated by the best team in the world finding form and fitness. They’ll go on their usual run now.
With a fully fit first 11 we have a chance against them but with too many players out who are key to us we can’t compete with city.

What…. Benta is clearly still not fit and we are managing his minutes, and quite frankly Benta wasn’t playing very well his passing was very poor.
Why would we change our tactics? Until the last 15 minutes we actually defended incredibly well and city didn’t particularly create anything. Our attacking platform relies on key players.
Like ange said… they’re 8 SEASONS!!! Ahead of us in their development. It’s our first season wr have developed a lot the squad is improving and there is still work to be done.
City are simply the best team in the world and they were well rested which we never see. Their press was insane.

Very.

For 9000 fans there last night they were pretty poor noise wise. All I heard was "have you ever seen Tottenham win the league" a few times and that was it.

If we have a fit Madders and Son our attack looks very different but I still think our priority in the summer has to be one or two elite attackers. The likes of Werner, Richarlison and Johnson aren't on that level and it's telling when we play 3 of them together. Even Deki blows hot and cold too often on the wing. Add Solomon to that and we have a bunch of wingers/strikers who are very good bench/rotation options but ultimately you don't want them starting every week.

City were superb last night but were helped by some poor performances, notably Kulu who looked strangely subdued . Like a boa constrictor they just squeezed and we could not break out. We certainly lacked decisiveness in our attacking play but I think that was due to the lack of attacking possession we could muster. There’s a reason they are champions of Europe and it showed. I also thought that having no Haaland actually helped them hem us in and control the ball with both foden and Alvarez pressing us throughout. As we tired they roll out De Bruyne and Doku and in the end we buckled. I’m not disappointed by the team, we needed our best 11 and options from the bench to beat them and we just fell short but nothing to despair about.
