Conor Gallagher: Spurs could make late approach for Chelsea midfielder

Chelsea willing to sell 23-year-old for right price this month, with Spurs keen to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg if they sign Gallagher

Tottenham Hotspur are seriously considering a renewed approach for Conor Gallagher — having initially tried to sign the Chelsea midfielder last summer.

Chelsea are willing to selling the academy graduate, who has 18 months remaining on his contract, for the right price. They wanted £50 million last summer for Gallagher and Spurs baulked at that valuation.

As a homegrown product, the sale of Gallagher would count as pure profit for Todd Boehly’s free-spending Chelsea as they try to stay within Financial Fair Play limits. Chelsea also rejected a £42 million offer from West Ham United last summer for the 23-year-old, who has 11 England caps.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Gallagher has been a key cog for Chelsea this season and has captained the side on occasion. Spurs’ interest in Gallagher is long-standing and they could then offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the midfielder who has rejected a move to Lyon. Hojbjerg’s lawyer Lars Halgreen has, however, said the Dane has no intention of leaving this month. Hojbjerg’s proposed move to Atletico Madrid last summer collapsed when the deal ran out of time.

“The player never asked to leave now,” Halgreen said. “He’s very ambitious for Tottenham and Denmark, [and] continuing to keep improving himself, like he did all his career. His only focus is Tottenham to finish the season well and to help as much as possible.”

They probably count in different accounting periods or some other numbers sorcery.
If I understand the explanations from other SCers, the pure profit of the sale hits instantly, whilst the cost of the player purchase is spread over the length of the contract.

E.g. a £30m sale and a £30m purchase (with a 5 year contract) results in a net gain of £24m in this accounting period. £30m now versus £6m per year for 5 years.

If as someone on here said, Chelsea need to make £100 mil in sales by July they'll need to sell more than one player.

According to the Athletic, our opening gambit in that negotiation was £3m plus Josh Onomah. Oh how differently things might have worked out…
That was the second bid, I heard our opening offer was £3m for Onomah and they include Grealish as a sweetener.

Problem is none of them will show any profit as all on long contracts and they haven’t been written down very much , that’s why I think they will have to sell him

Gallagher in and PEH out would solve a lot of our squad problems...!

Doing that for less than £15m net would be a result.

If Chelsea were smart, they could swap Gallagher for PEH and make a big dent in their PSR deficit.

IF they were smart...

By all accounts we're only moving for Gallagher if PEH moves on. That doesn't look likely to happen this window so I reckon Jacob is just regurgitating info for clicks.

Would be an ideal scenario, but unfortunately it's not going to happen IMO.
Hjobjerg already declared he is staying and sceptical that Chelsea would sell to us and that Gallagher would want to come.

Taking everyone's opinion out of it, it just doesn't add up to me that Chelsea seems to need AND want to sell him, but have everything working against getting any great amount of value besides the HG English factor. If he doesn't go in 3 days, he has 12 months left on his deal yet they don't want to offer him a new one?

Just seems so odd all around that they didn't take the west ham bid either that was solid money

Yes they will have to sell him so if they do it now they have fewer deals to do later.

Having taken Utd and the Goons for a ride with the Mount and Havertz deals they probably think someone will pay the £50m+, can't see any club going over £40m tbh.

Its all about FFP, they're in the shit and unlike players they've bought and could sell, Gallagher being from the academy would be pure profit with whatever money they get.

For example, they bought Nkunku for around £52m say they sold him for £70m tomorrow, that would only be £18m profit in regards to FFP. If they sell Gallagher for £40m thats pure £40m profit in FFP terms as he came through their academy and cost them nothing.

Thats why you see players like Palmer being sold by City, very same reasons.

Yeah I totally get and understand that part. But I read west ham offered 42 in the summer, and now I can't see that amount for him.

Especially if he stays until summer, can't see any side wanting to spend near 42, and they seem certain not to offer him a new deal lol

How is this even newsworthy? Spurs 'could' make late approach.... no shit, anything 'could' happen, he's hardly sticking his neck out.

Nothing new in that report really. Feel like that has been the narrative all window, ie we could move for Gallagher if PEH leaves. I’m sure that is true but PEH isn’t leaving so Gallagher isn’t coming.
