I know we are all rightfully hating on McGinn in here after Sunday, but he is obviously a really good player.
I don't hate him at all. He weakened Villa for our match plus three more to come at a crucial time of the season. Build him a (very ugly) statue I say!

To get this thread back on track, I looked at Villa talk and to be honest, overall it’s pretty reasonable. The vast majority put the defeat down to some combination of being tired, Emery setting them up wrong, squad depth, bad day at the office and even spurs being better than them. Sure there is the odd fantasist (like the guy who said the game was decided by 2 clear pens not given and a soft red) and some bitter ones (we aren’t even good) but they were definitely in a minority.

What’s interesting is their polls - McGinn got the most votes for MOTM (only 18% but still) followed by Cash. Not sure if that’s trolling but actually I’d struggle to say who their best player was and cash might be in with a shout. But most interesting was the ref poll.

Despite the majority of posters recognising the defeat was nothing to the do with the ref, over 3 times as many said he was bad than good. I realise you probably aren’t in the mood to be really nice to anyone when you lose 4-0, but in a game where there want a single genuinely contentious major incident where you could criticise the ref over half still thought he was bad. Shows how impossible the job is.

Was reading a f365 piece which made the interesting point that spurs have more PL points than Chelsea or Man U over the last decade, and Chelsea in 6th have 175 points more than West Ham in 7th over that period. So next time a fan of West Ham, Newcastle, Everton or Villa say they are as big as us and there isn’t a big 6, tell them to shove that where the sun doesn’t shine.

Just read that little piece on us, made me feel very fuzzy inside. COYS

I thought the referee performance was poor, but for both teams so I kind agree with them there. I say that because people were talking about him.

A good refereeing performance usually means he doesn't get much of a mention, but he was calling up fouls that were very soft, letting others go that were more blatant and was inconsistent in his general decision making. I'm not suggesting it impacted the result and he got most of the important decisions right, but purely because he was constantly in the conversation with the decisions he was making, it cries out that it wasn't a particularly good performance on his part.

He was terrible for us - I actually thought he gave Villa lot more than they should have got. The Sarr and Udogie yellows were very soft and unnecessary. I think the Villa fans think they should have had 2 penalties but in both instances the ball was won before the contact on their players. The red card was blatant even though a few fans think should have been a yellow. But villa fans moaning about the ref is purely because they lost - he was pretty good for them on most shit decisions.

The ref got several smaller things wrong, like not booking players (both teams). But he got the major decisions spot on (red card and the Villa penalty claims).

We were 0-2 up before the red and were in complete control. We still wold have won the game if they had XI, of that I am sure. All the red did was solidify the win earlier.

He’s that fucking ponderous that he’s rarely close enough to his opponents to make any form of challenge.
Him missing 3 games is a blessing for Villa as his replacement will be better.
I actually thought he was Villa's best player until the sending off.

Tielemans who played yesterday is like playing with 10 anyway. I haven't seen a midfielder go missing so much since Jenas.

He is, one of Villa's best players. He's one of those you love if he plays for you, and don't rate if he doesn't apparently. I happen to think he's under rated if anything personally.

Would it surprise any of you lot to learn that Gabriel Agbonlahor thought McGinn should've received a yellow card ?

Agbonlahor is everything that is wrong with a lot of ex pro's as pundits. Going on about how it wouldn't have been a red 20 years ago. Well it's not 20 years ago and as a pundit you need to view the games as they are today not how they would have been 2 decades ago. I'd personally love the game to be as it was years ago, but it isn't and so I try to view the game taking into account the rules and reg's of today when giving my view. There's no point in bothering at all if you don't.

Agbonlahor and Barton should be put forward every time people say "Ex-players should be referees / in control of VAR"

Haha On a serious note, it is a good point. A player will likely judge it to how they approached the game. For example, Gerrard clattering a player and taking the ball would be judged as not even a yellow by some ex-pros cause they would have approached the game full-blooded.

On the other hand, an ex-winger may deem soft touches as fouls cause the winger is running at speed.

You see it all the time with Shearer when he defends CFs when goalkeeper's come out and lightly brush them

Agbonlahor is quite possibly the dumbest person on tv and radio. Contradicts himself on a daily basis. I specifically remember him saying that Bissouma definitely deserved his red card against Forest despite not really making contact, yet doesn’t believe McGinn was red despite almost putting Udogie into the stands.

The man is an imbecile.
