What is with these "journalists" incessant need to try and have a "gotcha" moment over Ange? He literally sees it coming a mile away and easily breaks it down.

Set pieces are another reason I think we need a big centre forward. We don't have much threat from set pieces without Richarlison. Conte got a lot wrong but one thing he did well with was set pieces thanks to the set piece specialist. Improve that area by conceding less and scoring a few more then the points swing will be pretty good.

This is the thing, while CL qualification does generate higher money it also comes with the caveat that you also need to spend more on a better squad. Especially if you want to sustain that by qualifying year on year which ideally you need too to cover the higher wages. We could just go back to being a mid table side and not earn CL money but then we wouldn't need as much quality in depth as we won't have as many games. You're not just earning CL money without putting it back into the squad. All Ange can do is finish as high as he can with the players he has. If he gets into the CL the club should use the extra money to improve the squad so he can compete at that level to try win it while competing at the top of the league.

I really don't see how people can be disappointed with how the season has gone.

4th or 5th is a very good return based on our early season injury problems and how many young inexperienced players have adapted to the league.

The worries at the start of the season were clear. We'd lost our best player, we had signed a lot of inexperienced players, we had to adapt to completely different style of football with a new manager, that none of our players were really accustomed to.

We were worried about Son being on the way out, injury worries over Richarlison, Bissouma and Bentancur.

Disciplinary issues with Romero and Sarr, Udogie, Porro, Maddison, Vicario, VDV, Werner (half season) and Johnson in their first full season with us.
Games have got tougher as more teams are going all out defence against us, even this is a positive.

The positives are too numerous to count. The negatives are that we didn't do well in the cups and a few players like Kulusevski and Bentancur not being as good as expected.

Looking at the way we've bought and how we've addressed our issues in the transfer market (Werner and Dragusin in January for example) has been a breath of fresh air.

This summer for the first time in what seems like an eternity we will be going into the transfer market in a position of strength.

We've had a few bad results, but even then our performances haven't been that bad. If we get CL that will be a bonus, but we are all but guaranteed European football next season.

We already have Bergval to look forward to in the Summer and no doubt we will add at least 2/3 more. Our scouting system is now at an elite level so we have a reason to believe that those additions will be of a high quality.

We can also expect improvement from the majority of the squad due to the age and talent of the players we have.

Step back and look at the positives and negatives this season and we can see we are in a much stronger position.

His outlook on money, spending, and squad building is really refreshing. I appreciate how he is sensible about finding the right players even if they aren't the blockbuster signings. That confidence in recruitment is infectious and long may it continue because it is a really good feeling having some trust in our scouting process looking at data and character fit.

I hope this translates to the supporters rather than the price tag on a player for once. For example, getting Werner on a loan came out of left field and raised a lot of eyebrows - and he still has so many question marks about whether he is really good or not and would justify an outlay to sign him permanently. But what is not in question anymore, and I love this, is whether either decision will be the right one at the end of the day. If Werner signs for 15m or X left wing player signs instead for only 40m rather than 100m, we know that Ange isn't just doing it because he has the money to now that we qualified for CL. Equally, he isn't just doing it because he needs more players in the squad because we are back in Europe. He has been saying it about Lo Celso and Brennan Johnson; he signs the player and plays them because he knows they are going to contribute to the success of the team in some way. It's about attracting the right players for Tottenham Hotspur and for the Spurs way of football and competing for the very top, not just finding the players that feel their talent entitles them to CL football or a certain wage or now we can go get X caliber of player in this higher bracket of transfer fee and wages i.e. going with Mickey Van de Ven instead of Tapsoba which, hands up, I foolishly slated along with others as being the "cheaper choice."

It's important we keep reminding ourselves about this as we keep building on this progress and as we see the squad take shape in Ange's molding.

I think we started the season so well that our expectations became much higher.

Most people at the start of the season were talking about top six being a good season.

There were also lots of people last season saying we would be a mid table team at best without Kane.

The fact we are going for top four and feel good about the club again is progress. And even more importantly is you can see how we can improve next season too.

He's got some big decisions to make in the summer. Needs to be harsh imo. Arteta was ridiculed over Raya but he was right. Ange needs to make big calls some of which we might not like
I think the criticism of Arteta had little to do with signing Raya and a lot to do with how he discussed and went about utilising the two keepers at his disposal. For example, talking about the potential to routinely substitute his keeper mid-game as an elaborate tactical option.

Great post and agree with 99% of it, nice one!

But Bentancur not being as good as expected? What were you expecting this season coming back from such a big injury? He did amazingly to come back so early, to play so well against Villa before he got Cashed and is now finding his feet again after a broken toe with quite a few games left in the season. Most of us said there was no way he'd get back to his best this season based on one injury, not three, and yet he's already flirted with it a couple of times with those two extra injuries to take into account.

the irony is that under conte, we were supposed to be defense-first and yet we couldn't stop goals against

under ange, we're supposed to be all-out attack, and we can't score
We've scored in 29 of 30 PL games and have averaged >2 goals per game, which is 30% more than we've averaged in the PL overall. If that's not good enough, what's your expectation? Averaging 3 goals per game (that would be a PL record), scoring at least 2 goals in every game (another PL record), and never failing to score in a single match ever?

Our current scoring rate has put on on track to tally 78 PL goals this season, which would be our second highest ever scoring season in 32 years of PL football. Our best tally was 86, back in 2016-17, when we peaked under Poch and clocked up our highest ever points tally (86) and our best ever PL finish (2nd). Our next best goal tally was 74, the following season, when we finished 3rd.

Perhaps our scoring rate this season has been overshadowed by us not shipping loads of goals, as many people (at least many pundits) seemed to expect us to under Ange, unless he compromised from the philisophy and style of football that he has implemented throughout his career (he hasn't).

Perhaps wrong use of words, hoped maybe. And I agree and there are signs he's getting back to something near his best, but it'll take time. But yeah definitely not his fault and to be expected.

Another positive that we will see him, hopefully, back to the player he was pre injury.

I don’t think that’s the reason personally.
look at Arsenal, who by most metrics are the best at attacking set pieces this season. They’ve done that with a combination of Jesus, Nketiah and havertz as their striker.
you don’t need a big target man to be good at corners.
but you do need a clear set of options, and then execute those plans well.

I have to be be honest, it’s the one thing that worries me about the NLD

I’d like him to be more vocal on the touch line , I can’t get my head around a manger that says nothing during a game , surely there are moments when you have to give guidance to the players however well drilled they are.
