10 to watch at the Euros

These players are in no particular order, just a list of 10 players, some who we have been linked with that I will be watching closely during the Euros.

1. Gokhan Inler, Switzerland, DM
As an Udinese follower I am really interested in whether he can continue his great season into June. Been a revelation at Udi and the fans in the Friuli love his cultured passing and his defensive awareness. Will get stuck in when needed to.

2. Jeremy Toulalan, France, DM
DM's probably feature a lot, since we are short of one, so any DM with the class of Toulalan is going to get special attention during the Euros. We all know about most of the French players and they have a lot to choose from in midfield, but I expect Toulalan to have a major role.

3. Miguel Veloso, Portugal, DM
While most of the worlds eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo, I dare say a fair few of us will be casting a look at Miguel Veloso, especially after the recent links with him. Could he be a solution in our midfield with his passing ability, I guess we will all know a little more about him after the tournament.

4. Mario Gomez, Germany, ST
Has had a great season this year and with Germany being seemingly one of the strongest sides there we might just see some fireworks from Gomez. Should be a contendender for top scorer.

5. Giorgio Chiellini, Italy, CB/LB
With most of the Italian team picking itself the major talking point has been who will replace injured captain Fabio Cannavaro at the back. The answer is probably Barzagli, but I expect Chiellini will see much more time in these euros than he might have. Big, strong and physical he is a real no nonsense defender.

6. Raphael ven der Vaart, Holland, CM
The jewel in BMJ's Hamburg team will probably be one of the most watched midfielders of the tournament. With Holland opening against Italy at the Wankdorff, VDV will have to be at his creative best against such experienced opposition.

7. David Villa, Spain, ST
One of the hottest properties around right now, with a reported tag of 17m, his partnership with Torres during the Euros could finally bring the Spain some glory. Since we have been strongly linked of course most Spurs fans will be watching closely.

8. Ruben De la Red, Spain, CM
Villa isn't the only Spaniard we have been linked to this summer, as the journo's naturally decide that Ramos will do a Rafa and go and raid Spain at every opportunity. I could have chosen Sergio Garcia, but if he gets some games I will definately be watching De la Red.

9. Andrey Arshavin, Russia, ST/AMC
He put in some stunning performances for Russia in qualification and for Zenit in the UEFA cup and lots of clubs are watching him closely (although not many can afford his wages). Clearly the star of the Russian team, which could surprise a few.

10. Luka Modric, Croatia, AMC
Our very own Luka. If there is a single Spurs fan out there that won't be watching every Croatia game just to see our new boy light up the tournament then I would be surprised. Can't wait to see him pulling the strings for a Croatia team at the Euros and Tottenham next season.

Good run-down. I'll probably watch most, if not every game, so I'll check out a few of these that I haven't already seen play. Especially Veloso, if we're linked so strongly. Don't think I've seen much of him.

Chances are both Villa and de la Red will be on the bench for Spain, while Arshavin has a 2-match ban and will probably only play in the final group game against Sweden - that is, if I predict correctly and Spain and Sweden leave the group.

Are Toulalan and Veloso starters, btw? Gomez and Chiellini probably won't be, for that matter, but they might.

IOMLS I remember we spoke a while ago in the irc chat about Di Natale, do you reckon he'll start for Italy? His form picked up towards the end of the season.

I'll also be interested to see quagliarella and Boriello if they get a chance. I'm really looking forward to this tournament, caan't wait for it to get going.

Yes Di Natale is a 100% certainty to start on the left of the front 3. Still as I said in the irc, he isn't getting any younger and he isn't suited to English football. He is however bang in form, so could have a good tournament.

All the hype is on Gomez. But surely Klose and Podolski are starters ahead of him, so I don't see how he's gonna score that many goals.

I should think that Kuranyi (sp?) is ahead of Podolski whom a lot of German fans regard as a disappointment (at least on the international level)... Either way, Klose is defo #1...

As for the earlier comment about Veloso, he has a good chance of starting but someone else surely knows the dynamics of the Portugal side better than I; I could see Villa and Torres together up front, but either could just as easily be up there alone--have to go with Torres based on recent form. Don't be too surprised to see De la Red start a couple of matches, he isn't well known outside of Spain but has a lot of class--I think he'll at least see some minutes as a sub.

Good list, IOMLS; I'll be watching Inler myself, along with Veloso and Mordic (and the rest of the Croat side!). Don't like VDV (that sounds like the name of an STD), attitude problem--hopefully Martin can sort him out next season.

Will Toualan start ahead of Makelele? Diarra? Viera (if fit?)

Arshavin may only play 1 game, which may even be pointless as he's suspended for the first 2 and as others have said, Gomez is probably 3rd choice.

These aren't the 10 players I'd pick to watch per say, but rather 8 players who I see are realistic transfer targets for us and that id hope our scouts are looking at. Unfortunately they probably won't all be first choices or may not even feature at all, but hopefully most will. I think all are reasonably realistic options and none player for any of the European giants, so would probably see a move to us and the Prem as a step up. De La Red is the only one that plays in one of the big 3 European Leagues.

Benaglio GK Switzerland
Fernando Mieria CB Portugal
Adler GK Germany
Westermann CB Germany
Simon Rolfes CM Germany
Arshavin AM Russia
Ruben De La Ded CM Madrid
Sebastian Larsson RM/CM Sweden

Larsson is a damn good shout. I think he'll be bought by a good club after this tournament, we should've tried to get him on the cheap as soon as the season ended

I agree.

I like the Czech player Jarolim aswell, but don't want him to leave BMJ at HSV, as VDV will probably be leaving.

I didn't say it was a list of the 10 best players, it's just 10 players I will be interested in seeing play. I'm fairly sure a few of them won't be starting every game, but I am still interested in seeing them.

As for Arshavin and Russia, I was unaware of the suspension (poor from me), but I still think Russia will do well and he will play in more than one match.

Oh and I think Benzema belongs on that list

Um yeh, but Benzema is a mile out of our league, like 50m euros or some ridiculous figure and so as a result I didn't have him on the list. It wasn't supposed to be a be all and end all list, just some players I would be looking out for. Feel free to pick some players of your own and maybe i'll keep my eye out for them too.

Toulalan (knock off the first and last letters and what have you got?) is very good indeed. Unfortunately, I think we've got about as much chance of getting him as we have Benzema.

I could see How Inler is so rated, he reminds me a lot of Carrick in that game. His passing was superb, However he didn't get much of the ball and a lot of the time he went missing, however normally that's good for a DM, anyways!!

He was on the bench, although you can have the rest of your squad on the bench. Was overlooked when they wanted to go more defencive as well.

Not sure if Big Phill was wanting a more exsperianced team to start with, and he might get some game time later in the tournement
