The thing for me is that Son has missed two pretty big chunks of the season, and has had a couple of patch periods too. When he's been good, he's been our best player. But for me the player of the season award is about consistency. And so for me it's really between three players, Sissoko, Vertonghen and Alderweireld. Sissoko for me just edges it.
I follow and sympathise with your rationale all the way up until mentioning Alderweireld. I do not think he has been consistent at all, in fact I think he has been inconsistent, and his worst has been rather awful. For me consistency in general, although important, only goes so far. You can be consistent and bland or mundane at the same time. Consistency doesn't equal excellence. It's true Son has missed out on part of the season. But his strengths edge it for me. He has taken responsibility when nobody else could, he is enthusiastic, he too has improved season on season and in fact gone from being inconsistent to rather consistent, and he has decided multiple matches singlehandedly. Sissoko has come a long way, but simply going from being outrageous to being rather reliable isn't enough in this context.
