When AVB first come in i was one of his biggest fans, i knew everything about him, read the book, watched videos of Porto, read every blog, report, article i could find on him online. I was so excited, this man who's ideal footballing style was that of Guardiolas at Barca, a man who wanted pressing and possession play in my favourite formation, 433. Then we went 442, Dempsey started centrally all the time, pretty much got in the way and ruined the build up, then it was Bales turn, we become a team all about getting it to Bale to see if he could beat 4 players or smash it in from 30 yards. I was confused, this is not the AVB i had wanted into our club so much, the one i had so much faith in to eventually win us a premier league title.

Today 433 got it's chance and it worked. We simply have to keep this 433 with Bale and one of Sigurdsson, Dempsey or Lennon as wing forwards and Holtby, Dembele and Hudd/Parker central. This is something i and many others have been calling for all season, we showed a good performance vs Everton with it but lacked pace, the second we switched to it today we looked fantastic and won the game.

I am currently highly skeptical of AVB's ability as a manager when it comes to setting out a balanced attacking team. The Wigan line up will be very big in determining whether we get 4th or not this season, if we go 433 we will finish the season unbeaten IMO, if we revert back to the hybrid 442/4231 we will be making it difficult for ourselves.

Please AVB, PLEASE learn from this.

Totally agree Re: 433 but I think Huddlestone has to play over Parker now, neither are great runners but Huddlestone is a footballer. Parker can't hit enough accurate passes, that lack off accuracy would kill us

My only doubt would be Huddlestone in there when we had to combat in a game away from home, at home vs weaker teams we will dominate then definitely. Sandro over him in all games though imo.

Authorised biography on him by two of his close friends. Google it, it's a good read but leaves you a bit confused as to how we played this season if the philosophies identified are true.
work with what you have got has role to play in his choices though.

I've heard this a few times this week, Carrol/Huddlestone/Holtby in for Parker but we need a defensive midfielder in there. The two that play ahead of him is what should be discussed.

Parker played well today I thought too, and even though we were a lot smoother after changing things up there were no doubt a number of times that City got in behind and had a lot of space. We were chasing the game so we knew we'd be sacrificing a bit of solidity in the middle but I wouldn't choose to play with 3 offensive minded players in the middle.

I think that after his Chelsea experience he hasnt tried to change things too quickly. The players are familiar with the 4-2-3-1 system and so he has stuck to that. We have probably worked on 4-3-3 at times in training, and I tink we will see it alot more next season.

I reckon we'll have been working on it for months, AVB will know the core of his squad for next month and is preparing accordingly

He came in today against a rampant man city midfield containing yaya youre. Its about as testing as it gets no?

I understand your reasoning but i'd argue that we changed it more by playing Dempsey over Sigurdsson(Sigurdsson far more similar to VdV) and then moving Bale central to the point where we eventually ended up with no wingers because of Lennons injury. There come a point where going 433 would have been better. Hopefully he will learn from now and stick with 433 for the rest of the season.

Yeah I don't think he did too badly, he did a shit load of work and by not playing an out and out playmaker it shows up the limitations in his game. When you go into a game with effectively four doing what they want and not tracking back well, as we saw first half, then its asking for trouble against the top teams. I said at half time, Parker and Dembele were giving there all, just getting over-run.

We dominated at home, i'm talking about games away to Arsenal, Swansea, Utd, City, Chelsea where we might get the run around from their midfield when we don't have the ball. City are quite slow centrally other than Yaya when no Silva there(Barry and Milner today)

Players don't just suddenly look as comfortable in a formation as they did today without preparation. 4-3-3 has clearly always been the plan, but to get there he's had to get the squad to the point where he believes they can actually play it.

Also I think that not getting his linchpin in Moutinho has been a considerable factor with Huddlestone returning from near-on a year out.

Agreed, I also think its telling we u the 4 3 3 at youth levels, integrating the system through the club

This exactly - Last season alongside Modric he was brilliant, the two playing the ball around to each other at a high tempo, as Modric always made himself available. Parker's infamous pirouette was just as unpopoular with fans at Newcastle, we just didnt see it much last season, as more often than not he had an option on.
