I look at the league fixtures in blocks from month to month.

for August i had us down for 4pts. a draw on opening day, win against sunderland and a loss at Chavs. In fact at the start of the season, my point prediction for us to finish on was 70pts. I'm already 3 down so I think we're on for a 67. However, after the changes in ownership to man city i've re-adjusted it to a 64pt prediction.

September is again reasonably modest with a 4pt prediction from the 3 games... and that's with only a point against Villa so a win and i'm getting back up to where i thought we'd be at the start of the season. A loss and i'm still only 1 more down on my re-adjusted prediction of 64pts. very much on for 5th.

It's all so heart warming :)

Got to love that optimism. Your already 3 points down on your first months predictions but you feel that’s a one off and all the subsequent months will be pretty much right, as such you have only adjusted your initally total by 6 points for the rest of the season. Maybe a better way of working out a realistic total based on your predictions would be that you predicted 4 points for august and we have ended up with 1 so we have achieve a ¼ of the points you have expected. If you continue on your current prediction form throughout the season then we would end up with between 17-18 points !! Disclaimer the last exams I took were GCSE’s in 96 and I managed a D in math’s re-sat it the following year and got a D again.

I'd love you to be right though. I personally think this season will be similar to last where we finish mid table and challenge for a cup getting to a least one final. Whether we win the final often comes down to a bit of luck on the day so even if we win a cup or not I'd be fairly happy with that.

I know the holy grail is the champions league but I think we are still some way off that with all the changes that have been made. Maybe if and it’s a big if we are able to keep a squad together for a couple of seasons with limited changes and Promising players fulfilling their potential we would have a good enough team to challenge. I just really don't think we are quite there yet.

Our next six games are:

Villa H
Wigan H
Pompey A
Hull H
Stoke A
Bolton H

Really, we should beat Wigan, Hull and Bolton at home and Stoke away. We beat Pompey away last season out of the blue and we should get a point at least against Villa at home. So maybe 14-16 points from our nest 6 games (possibly 18 on paper but when do we ever win 6 games in a row). Any less than 14 would be disappointing and effectively rule out a top 4 finish, seeing as the games after that are Arsenal away and Liverpool home. I know top 4 is unlikely now but definitely out of reach if we don't get a good few points from those games. As would top 5.

The problem is as a spurs fan, you look at the games and think, yeah win that, yep win that one, hmm probably a draw. But football is football and it never turns out that way..

If I looked at Boro away and Sunderland home, I would have thought, two seemingly easy games that we should get 6 points from, we lost both, what do I know?

Hull,Bolton,Wigan at home may look easy, but you never know..

Its too hard to predict.

Finally, someone that agrees with me!!! (Per the Champions League, now or never thread)

I'm one for optimism. I agree totally that we should be beating all those teams with the exception perhaps of a draw at Pompey.

Why shouldn't we aim for a top 4 finish? If we're going to aim for 10th, then fuck it, lets save our ticket coin, support Man Utd from London like 80% of their prawn sandwich brigade do :bang: and get plastered at the boozer 3pm every Sat arvo to drown our sorrows.

I understand as has been pointed out, we have a terrible record against the top 4, accepted, but it's 11 on 11 and I'm saying if we play to 100% of the sides ability we should get some results here and there against the Scum, Liverpool and like we did in snatching a point at Shit Bridge.

Too true. I lost far too much money betting on Spurs last season. Scorelines are going to be difficult anyway, but with Spurs nigh-on impossible.

I'll just remind people to look at my sig. We're only 3 over par, if we get 7 points from the next 3 games we'll get par. If we win all 3 we'll be 2 under par and in a very strong position.

In the period from the 19th Oct to 13th December we have a good chance at picking points up. In the corresponding fixtures last season we didn't win any games and only managed 4 points out of a possible 30! If we can get 20 points we'll be on course for a high 60/low 70's finish. If we can beat liverpool we may have a shot at 4th.

Long way to go, anything is possible (well, except the obvious). We need to ensure Sunderland was just a one-off in terms of our home form though, as we need to make WHL a fortress as Ledley has already said a couple of times.

Teams aiming for the top four will look to take at least 15 points from those games and we should be aiming for that. If we continue the improvements shown at Chelsea the games stated should be very winable and if we can show the resiliance we had at Chelsea a point at Pompey isn't out of reach.

I'll go for about 50-55, max. Yes, we've got a pretty strong squad, but so have Pompey, Man City and Villa.

I didn't expect us to get anything at boro or Chelsea because we haven't won a lot of game away for the last four years. In fact, from what I can remember from the stats I was looking at, we lose about half our away games so the point against Chelsea was a bonus. I did expect to beat Sunderland though so we're two points down on what I thought. The game at home to villa will be a very good test. The way the set out to counter attack we'll find it hard to break them down and have to watch out for the speed in which their forwards break. I'm being positive and going for a win.

Too hard to call at the moment. Let's see how the new boys perform in the next few games, and then we'll have a better idea of how many points we can get, I reckon.

I've been seriously harsh in my predictions though. Not one win home or away against a top 4 team and only 1 home win in the 6 fixtures against Everton, Villa and City. Thats what is so optomistic about what i'm saying, even with our start and even with a negative approach to predicting games against the top 7 teams in the league, i've still got a total of 64pts.

Wild, wild optimism.

Optimism implies an opinion. What I wrote (and others to a degree) was not an opinion but a statistical analysis. There's no reason why we can't get 70 points this season and I have outlined what we need to be looking for in the next 15 games to be on target.

For the record, i don't believe we will finish top 4. I believe 2 out of 3 wins were needed from our first 3 fixtures to have a good chance of doing that. However, our next few games offer us a genuinely good chance of getting a lot of points on the board and they way Arsenal stuttered against Fulham and West Brom, coupled with Liverpool currently playing very averagely (i know they've got the results but if they keep playing like that, it won't last much longer), then there's proof that anything from 3rd downwards is a possibility for us, Villa, City etc.

I think we'll be top 6 but 5 wins from our next 6 games could change everything. Here's hoping. The difference with me is i won't be spouting horrific shit about what ****s we are if we don't finish where i'd like them to.
