Yes they do Millwall qualified a few years ago after being losing finalists

oh no they don't :)

as marty just explained :)

(AFAIK anyway :)

re the Europa Lge -as someone else said the comp is a farce or a bad joke as I tend to call it

too manny games - too little money - games on a thursday

and the crwoning insult - losing CL teams parachuted in !!!!!!!!!

when UEFA sort the tournament out more in line with egalitarian principles then my respect for the comp wil go up

meanwhile - by all means if we're in it - fine - but play weakened teams in the early stages if the games are on a thursday and there's a PL game on the sun

We should go for league position next season. Forget the Europa.
Since Feb 1st our league form has been excellent, although only 12 games, if we can maintain that form over a season we'd achieve approx 72 points from 38. Enough for a top 4.

No Europa thanks - it looks farcical anyway with the finalists having to play a minimum 17 European Cup games and we'd be starting early in July against some nonsensical opposition from Eastern Europe.

I agree with focusing on the league - we need to re-establish ourselves as among the top 4 challengers if we want to go anywhere and attract and retain our best players. Europa league gives some exposure, but in reality most good players want CL and would be more attracted to the prospect of getting in to the top 4.

I would hesitate to extrapolate our current post-Jan window form to next season. I think we've been fairly lucky with injuries this season, esp regarding Woody and King; if we were hit as hard as Everton or Ars*nal or like Villa lost our best defender we would find it difficult to keep up this form. I can also see players like Hudd demanding to leave this summer, so perhaps our squad depth isn't as great, and I think we will regret letting Bent or Pav go. Man City will strengthen massively this summer, and Everton are only a few signings and better fitness away from being a very good team. So I think we'll need a very good summer and some luck with fitness and the continued good form of Lennon, BAE, Modric etc next season to make top 6, much less challenge for 4th, and I'll be very happy if we do so.

i'm sorry but was it not just 2 years ago when we made the quarters of the uefa cup and finished 5th in the league while reaching the semi-final in the carling cup and the quarter's in the FA cup who says we cant compete if we get Europa

We won't get 7th.

Speaking to a mate of mine who is a Fulham fan, He said Fulham always beat Everton at the Cottage.

Also Liverpool are the only team in the Prem to remain unbeaten at home this season.

Perfect time for that to change then

Granted it was only 2 seasons ago, that this happened but we are a different team now no Berbatov and no Malbranque two very creative players who made and scored many goals for us, I'm not saying that we don't have players who can score goals but we need to develop a consistency like we had that year.

Don't forget the teams that we beat easily in that season have raised their game (Aston Villa, Fulham, Everton, West Ham and Man City) not to mention the other "lesser" teams who refuse to be rolled over especially at home (Stoke, Bolton, and Wigan) these teams will all be looking to compete next season.

AFAIK losing finalists don't qualify

if everton lose the final they take a europa spot as they are 6th

then the 7th take the spare spot that utd generated by winning the lge cup

if everton win the final then then the 7th spot qualifies due to the two spare places generated by everton and utd winning cups

*EDIT* I realised I was explaining exactly what you just said, Never mind!

Liverpool have only lost 2 games from july08 to february 4th 2009: twice against Tottenham Hotspur (ok we didn't deserve to win the first one in the league but still ...) Come On You Spurs

Berbatov is irraplaceable i'll grant u that but we replaced steed with Luka who is far superior and we have a bigger and better squad then we did back then. and apart from Keane and berbatov there was no consitency in taht season as jenas was always injured, king was always injured, we rotated zokora and hudd the whole time, y p lee and bennie were fighting it out for left back, tony gardner and davenport took turns to cover for King so there definiatly was not alot of nosistency then

Therefore by the same token the team that wins it should really get a Champions league spot the next year.
That would sort the tournament out and nobody would play weakened sides in any round.

They were unbeaten away until they faced us :)

good call stemark - sauce for the goose and all that

I really am massively disappointed with UEFA for introducing a new competition and yet despite all their spouting on about getting a more level playing field, the two europe competitions are still massively pro CL

I did read there willl be more money in the Europa than the UEFA, so if that's true that is a step forward and I'll congratulate UEFA on that - but I await how it all pans out

I doubt there's enough to make a club like ours or Villa for example think twice if it comes to sacrificing lge points at a vital stage of the season - it's the Europa that will be the 'non-priority'

It's so weird to have something to play for that you don't really care about at the end of the season. I think UEFA have really ballsed it up by turning the Europa League into such a farce.

If we were to get into it I just know what would happen. We'd get through the group stage and then as we get towards the latter stages we'll have to field a weakened team because the league will be a higher priority.

Really what's the point in just going through all that again? People should only really be in the tournament if they genuinely want to win it. If we're in it it will be the least of our priorities and that just ultimately seems like a waste of time.

It's such a shame aswell because getting into Europe should be a great achievement. Instead though it's been turned into a ludicrous competition where you have to play 346 games to get to the final and frankly I don't think anyone in Europe will really prioritise it over other competitions.

Bravo UEFA.

I hope we don't get 7th. I think it's too many games, they are against poor teams and it moves a lot of our matches to Sunday.

I know it's not right as a Spurs fan but I do hope that Fulham get 7th place.

Bet 365 are offering 22-1 on a Spurs and Everton double on Sunday (Basically 22-1 on us getting 7th). I think its unlikely we'll get it but that has to be worth a few quid!
