A silver lining?

I was thinking today, could the Modric transfer fiasco possibly have a silver lining?

If Levy is true to his word and hangs onto him, and Modric responds professionally to this and stays, it may provide a bit of a wake up call in the sense that it will show beyond all doubt that we must do all that we possibly can to ensure success next season in the form of new signings? This could result in a few much needed new recruits and a successful season (cup and top 4 anyone?)...

What do we think? Is this possible? Or will Modric's bombshell have no affect on the way we approach this window?

Levy digging his heels in could possibly work with Modric, really depends on who is talking in his ear really. I don't think he would go on strike like the Dutch lad at forest, was van hooidonk or Bryan Roy?

It comes down to trying to keep harmony in the squad. If you force Modric to stay are you left with an unhappy player whose attitude rubs off on the squad.

If you allow him to go do you open the door for teams to come and take Bale and Rafa too?

The only thing for sure is that Chelsea are a shower of *****!

No hes behaving badly . He should have simply asked for a meeting in private with Levy asking for assurances that he would be allowed to leave at the end of next season should we fail to secure champions lge qualification again.
Failing that he should have just kept quiet and let his agents do the dirty work.
Ive lost respect for him.

I was thinking that, but you would like to think we were still aiming high, player-wise before this whole Modric fiasco.

I did like hearing Harry say we'll have to sign players to show Modric we mean business or whatever was said along those lines but I'm not gonna get excited over it, we've heard it all before. Will only believe it when I see it.

You don't know that he didn't do that though.

Yes i believe it will not be too difficult to persuade Luka to stay for another season if we get in an exciting player or two, to raise morale and expectation at the club.

I do believe it to be important to locate the player who will eventually replace him though. Someone young and raw. Generally think we should try and do this for every position even if we have a top player in that position at the moment.. Left back springs to mind.

I was thinking the same. It defo puts pressure on DL to bring in the 2 or 3 that HR wants - I think they were trying anyway, but this can only increase the need to have a go at the title and quickly.

It looks almost certain Mod will stay now (for at least another season) and we have to hope he isn't too unsettled - we've unsettled players too remember - Charlie Adam's form dropped right off after the Jan transfer window and it could be argued it cost Blackpool their place in the Premiership - so although i detest what's happened and the way it's happened, it's part of footy sadly...

If anything it spells out the importance of getting a top 4 spot next season.

Levy/Lewis are not interested in runnnig a club that simply sustains itself. They are businessmen that want to see their investment do well and make a profit. There is a huge amount of money to be made by forming a team that regularly qualifies for the Champions League. That's what we're trying to do.

It's pretty simple...sell Modric and VDV, Bale and Sandro will soon follow. Who could blame them? We need to start investing heavily in some new strikers, and ideally increasing the average wages.

Sadly the reality is that Lewis sees us as a toy he's unwilling to invest much more money in (probably saw the results of the Bentley deal and thought "fuck this"), and Levy is powerless to do anything about the wages without the extra investment.

Levy HAS to say no to selling our best players. I'm aware he's said it in the press, but he needs to stick to his guns. If he does this, a better class of players will have more confidence in joining Tottenham.

I'm starting to think it was a setup from the club (I know it wasn't really but just hear me out).

There were a number of ways we could deal with this but I think that standing firm and telling the big clubs that we are now a big club ourselves and they can't get our best players was the most positive statement the club could have made. We gain more respect within the world of football, we keep together a good squad and we have maybe set ourselves up to have to make big signings to back up our intent.

That has to be positive for players looking at our club. We could sign a couple of top class strikers and be a real threat in this league.

Anyone considered that blocking a move for Modric could actually put players off coming?

That we're seen as a halfway house to the big time for foreign players of a certain talent looking for guaranteed football to prove themselves but easy passage to the big time once they have?

Just a thought. Dunno if I do

Maybe if we do nothing to improve. But we really need to make a big impact on the transfer market now and show everyone that keeping Modric was just the first step in our ambitions.

I still think the context and tone of what Luka said was not quite the way it was reported, if asked about the offer and chelea he would say respectful things about them, he's like that but yes this could put down a marker for us.
That said if the reported wages are correct over a five year contract Luka Modric would be £20million better off so I think we have to accept that we'd take that seriously if we took our responsibility to our family seriously.

I think it will work with moreover as I can't see him not giving 100% but with berbatov and maybe keane I think it would have gift the team more

This was always going to be a big summer but I think this could well make a difference - might stop any vacillating in terms of who we bring in...the Modric saga could be the shove in the back we need (Levy)...
