Tottenham and Manchester United plotting summer moves for Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana

The in-form England midfielder is the top target at both Old Trafford and White Hart Lane this summer as Southampton get braced for bids
---------------------------------------------------

Adam Lallana is emerging as a top summer target for Tottenham and Manchester United, report the Sunday People's Dean Jones and Steve Bates.

Lallana’s name was handed to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy by boss Tim Sherwood on a list of potential buys.

And Sunday People Sport understands Spurs will pursue Southampton’s attacking midfield player even if Sherwood leaves his current role, with Louis van Gaal tipped to take over.

United boss David Moyes – already closing in on Saints defender Luke Shaw – is also in the hunt for Lallana, 25.

Moyes is looking for fresh midfield talent, and Lallana fits the bill.

He has excelled this season and may even be included in Roy Hodgson’s starting line-up at the World Cup.

Saints are playing down the chances of this season’s top performers leaving the club, but are realistic enough to realise they will have to fight off suitors.

After the unimpressive impact of last summer’s big overseas signings, Spurs are targeting experienced Premier League talent. Tottenham’s director of football, Franco Baldini, has also endorsed Sherwood’s view of Lallana.

Well, as good a player he is, I cant see us going for him.

One reason is, he might be valued in 25m by Southampton. Two, I can't see us going by Sherwood's list.
It will be the new manager's list. If its a continental manager say like LVG or FDB, its difficult to see it happening.

I don't know if it's greatly possible or not but this is the player I really want, I just really thinks he's a player that can really contribute to us playing some good attractive football again. I honestly think that clever players like Lallana are one of the main things we need right now.

Top quality. I really rate him. 2 feet and great decision making. 9 goals, 6 assists. Southampton would be nowhere without him.

Would love to sign him, but I can't see it happening as I can't see us shelling out over £20 million for him.

He, Rodriguez and Shaw are fantastic players.

Fantastic player.

However, and I'm not saying I don't want him - If we decide to go for him I hope it has the FULL backing by next seasons manager with the certainty that he fits in with the way that we'll play next season and beyond.

This lad should one of the first names on the team sheet.

I don't want to see another player wasted.

Yes please. Won't happen though. His ego seems to have become hugely inflated and I think he'll be holding out for one of the bigger teams.

We were apparently interested back in Harry days. Should have bit the bullet then!
Just the sort of player we need!

Don't be silly. We prefer to wait until they are tearing it up and their price has inflated by 5 times. At which point we try again to get them on the cheap.

I guess the question would be....what is his best position? I would LOVE for us to get him but not at the expense of playing time for someone like Eriksen.

He's played off the right a lot for Saints and off the left for England. Eriksen needs to be in the hole for us next season so if Lamela doesn't pan out or is sold off to AVB at Zenit then maybe Lallana becomes our new right sided midfielder? Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.

If god forbid we ever sell Lamela, he won't go to Zenit, he would go to one of the big clubs and succeed.

I don't want Eriksen's playing time to be curtailed either. As far as I'm concerned though, the more creative, intelligent ball players in the squad the better. We have enough strong players. we need more who can pass the bloody ball.

Surely if we some how managed to get Lallana signed up he would play as part of a midfield 3 in a 4-3-3

Something like

Sandro

Paulinho Lallana
and we would persist with using Eriksen at LM

This is a pre-mature statement I'm sure, but can anyone see Pritchard developing into a Lallana kind of player? I mean arguably he is the same kind of player already...got the intelligence and drive we are looking out for. You look at players like Lallana, John Stones and other Championship players that have managed to make the step up comfortably. Pritchard fared well when he played for Peterborough, and has excelled this year for Swindon. Don't see why we can't have him around the squad for next season rather than splashing out on someone at an inflated fee. Same with Carroll, Fryers, Fredericks and Veljkovic primarily. Want to see our players given a chance throughout the summer and hopefully a few will be granted the chance to make the step up. Wishful thinking? Don't see why this cannot and should not happen regularly apart from the pressure on European spots.

There's a difference in either giving some of our youngsters loans with Championship or lower PL clubs or the occasional cherry picked cameo role in a cup game and having young inexperienced players as a serious part of the squad.
I thought Lallana has been a decent player for Southampton for a while but he is 25 now and had the benefit of gaining experience and developing his game through the championship and into the PL amidst far lower expectations
I really don't want to see too many of the youngsters pushed into the squad prematurely or simply because they are home grown. Where there are young players that are clearly knocking on the door and have shown on loan that they can cut it in a competitive league then fair enough, but pushing players forward for no other reason than they are young home developed players won't necessarily help the players being pushed too soon or the club trying to challenge for a position amongst the top four

Can't help but feel he is going to be a very expensive mistake for some club.

One of the fundamental problems of being in the position we are in at the moment. Personally think that being in the limbo situation that we are in should allow us to experiment. Not suggesting we throw all our youth players into the first team squad, just think that there should be an assessment of what we have before we start chucking silly money about. Pritchard and Carroll are the kind of players we have been crying out for, to some extent, and having them around the team for pre-season, cup games and as first team cover for at least the first half of next season will test their viability for the first team and hopefully force a step up. What's the point in our youth system that we have spent so much money on to just ship out our best prospects?
