Because, and whisper it quietly as many hate to hear it, maybe players care more about international games and competitions than club ones? They want to win with their country, so any goals and wins probably mean more.

Comps like AFCON happen every few years, so for some of these players it may be their only experience.

That doesn't mean they don't care about club competitions though, before someone has a go.
