"I came out of the stadium late because I had the anti-doping test and I wanted to go and meet my team-mates in a restaurant, but there were no taxis at that time of night," Nayim recalled. "So I saw a bus and asked the driver if he could take me to the restaurant. The bus was full of Zaragoza supporters. Most were asleep, but someone saw me and shouted: 'It's Nayim', and everyone woke up, saying 'What is he doing here?'. That's what football is all about."

I still wake up at night, bolt upright, sweating and screaming "Ian Woan noooooo!"*

*given the time period, my lawyer has asked me to make it clear that Ian Woan did not touch me.

Darren Caskey who played for the same boys team as me donning the lillywhite was as clear a message to me of our standing in the 90's...

The one season of hope was killed next time out by Gerry Francis' transfer dealings.
Sell Klinsmann, Barmby, Popescue buy Armstrong, Sinton, Fox etc
I know the outgoings were not his doing but the lack of ambition in the replacements was terrible.
We sold class and bought 'safe' mid table plodders whilst Arsenal even with Rioch in charge got Bergkamp.

That's harsh. Klinsmann (mercenary who had a clause in his contract he could leave if we failed to qualify for European football), Barmby (allegedly homesick) and Popescu (desperate to play for Barca) all wanted to leave. Francis didn't sell them.

Armstrong is under rated by so many Spurs fans. The Teddy/Armstrong partnership was superior than that of the Sheringham/Klinsmann partnership in terms of stats (despite the team being weaker behind them). I hated Fox, didn't mind Sinton. Both brought balance to the team though.

Biggest problem we had under Francis was injuries to our key players and the poorness of our full backs.

Klinsmann gets away with so much from Spurs fans. His initial lack of loyalty made Sugar even more bitter than usual and that's what stopped us getting Bergkamp.

The most disappointing season for me of the 90's was 96/97. Going into the season I thought we had an outside shot of the title. We had a very balanced side and the previous season we had been in contention only for injuries to derail us. Euro96 had shown a wider audience the worth of Teddy and Anderton (who had been injured for much of 95/96).

IIRC in the first four games we lost Mabbutt (broken leg), Anderton, Sheringham and Armstrong to mid to long term injury. That was the end of that......

Keep getting flashbacks...

The ball bouncing over Ian Walker's shoulder from a McManaman shot.

Being born in 81, the 90's meant I had to endure my whole secondary school life being a fan of a team of melts who always finished 12th and regularly got smashed by, well, everyone at some point.

One of my few fond recollections of the time post-Venables is actually just remembering that Arsenal really weren't that great in those days, regularly enduring mediocre finishes and not being the force they are today. Any Gooner who wants Wenger out and fails to see where he's taken that club is an idiot.
