If the rumours are correct, other will = Garay, who hits a mean dead ball (nine goals so far for Santander, which may include some penalties). That would be a real statement of intent from Ramos: attack as the best means of defence.

I think you've got your wires crossed. He doesn't take the set-pieces, he's an expert at getting on the end of them.

No crossed wires. Garay bangs them in from setpieces too. Here's a bizarre YouTube profile which digresses into a 2-minute section on young Ezequiel's love of anchovies - I kid you not.

But at c4:30, Garay scores a great free kick against Real Madrid. And at c5:30, you see him scoring another freekick.

As long as Bale has learned to tackle by then.

bale's tackling is something that you mention quite alot and I'm not sure why?

The gareth bale I've seen can definitely tackle, his problem I see as a full back is more to do with his positional play & decision making which is just experience and can come very quickly. Sometimes he goes for balls when he should just stand up and usher people away. But he can definitely tackle.

I also think that Steed is the perfect player to play in front of bale for 2 reasons.

he comes inside allowing bale down the outside of him & he gets back in to do his share of defensive work.

I certainly think that bale will be our 1st choice LB next season.

I was watching setanta earlier today (some scottish radio show on television? )and they were convinced Hutton would be signing now and joining in the summer with Chimbonda signing now and leaving in the summer.

If that is the case should we play chimbonda in the CC Final? (probably another thread)

Because it's one major weakness in his game. It goes unremarked because we tend to focus (understandably) on his admirable qualities going forward.

Would it surprise you to learn that his tackling success rate is just 56%? It surprised me. Although I didn't think it was that good, it didn't occur to me that it was anywhere near that poor. That's the lowest of any of our squad, strikers included. It really needs to be over 80% before he can even be considered as a regular LB.

I'm not saying he won't improve, of course, and quite possibly he'll improve very rapidly—Martin said he would ultimately be a LB—but for the time being we do need Lee or Gilberto not only to fill in, but for Bale to learn from.

That figure is lower than I thought it would be but this is as a result of what I said that he goes for balls when he should stand up and usher people away, rather than his ability to tackle.

This would be easily resolved by the knowledge, experience and talking of the left sided central defender.

I reckon Bale's numbers would be nowhere near that low with Ledley playing inside him.

Its only a personal opinion but I think that ramos is going to love Bale and next season he will be 1 of our most important players and it will be from LB.

I wouldn't disagree in the slightest with any of that. But having long experience of how a promising player can go from hero to zero at the Lane in the space of a few games, I'd sooner Bale was eased into the LB spot gradually.

I actually agree with SS on Bale. I don't think Bale is that great defensively to be honest. Positionally or his tackling. I think he is potentially a better LM than a LB from wha I have seen so far. He could improve defensively but I don't think he looks likes he enjoys defending. Whereas he loves attacking.

Alan Hutton says ‘no’ again to Tottenham

Alan Hutton yesterday adamantly repeated that he would not be leaving Rangers, despite a renewed effort by both the Ibrox club and Tottenham Hotspur to conclude a deal for the player.
Tottenham have come back in with an increased offer for Hutton, with wages believed to be around £28,000 a week, but the London club were last night said to be losing their patience with the player and were ready to abandon the deal.
In an increasingly messy business, Hutton is understood to have changed his agent as the wrangling has gone on. But the full-back was believed to have reinforced to Rangers that, for personal and family reasons, he did not want to go to London. Hutton’s partner is due to give birth to their second child in three months’ time.
The saga has become highly complicated for Rangers, whose chairman, Sir David Murray, is known to want the transfer to be concluded. Hutton has been told by Rangers that a significant financial windfall will be his if he agrees to move to White Hart Lane.
Agents working on behalf of Tottenham confirmed last night that the London club had gone back to Hutton with an increased offer in personal terms, but that the club was now ready to finally abandon their attempts to lure the defender south.

Right can't we just end this. Chimbonda's good enough for us, just be nice to him.

I must admit i'm 50/50 on this. Chimbonda, in my opinion, is a very capable defender when he puts his mind to it. Dangerous in the air, fast and likes to get forward. But i quite like the idea of having a Scot in the team too. Hutton looks very good from what i've seen of him and he'll offer the extra 10% of Scottish grit that the laid back Chimbonda doesn't.

So, to summarise, i want to sign him because he's Scottish, unless he's similar to Christian Dailly.

If he doesn't want to uproot himself and his family, even for a whopping pay rise, then fine. I actually admire him for it. FFS, we complain about obvious mercenaries and then complain about a kid because he's got principles and loyalty? (Of course if he signs for United in the summer I shall slag him off mercilessly, but let's give him the benefit of the doubt for now.) And Murray's reported attitude shows that loyalty cuts both ways.

Some of us remember Richard Gough, whom we signed from Dundee (?) and was one of the best CBs we've ever had. He could have become a Lane legend, but his wife never took to life in London and after just over a season he signed for Rangers. I really wouldn't want a repeat of that.

Chimbonda is undoubtedly a bit of a knob, and really gets up my bracket at times with his casual attitude, and his doziness at set pieces. But he's most certainly not rubbish.

This saga just needs to be put to bed one way or the other. If indeed he has again turned us down then you have to avoid his loyalty, as it were, to Rangers. We are the mugs continuously trying to sign him.

Maybe we just dont take the hint.

I simply do NOT believe that Spurs would come back for him for the third time unless his agent has strongly hinted Hutton do want to join Spurs this time. No club can be so daft!
Sure, loyalty is well and fine but I think there's something else here. Hutton seem like a very confused person.

Who do you have in mind then?

I don't know, really...I've just never been impressed by Hutton, I guess I'd prefer a harder tackler. I'd like to have all the RBs that everyone has been daydreaming about lately (Dani Alves, Boswinga, etc) I suppose...
