Toby Alderweireld says he chose loyalty over money in order to stay at Tottenham. The Belgium centre-back, 30, was in the final year of his contract and had interest from Roma before extending his Spurs deal last month.

I'm glad to have Toby signed up for a few more years, but in all honesty, I wonder whether his loyalty was ever really tested with a big money offer. I somehow doubt it. I'm reminded of Romesh Ranganathan when he said 'I've never been unfaithful to my wife because I love her very much, she's the mother of my children and has been my best friend for many years..........very closely followed by......lack of opportunity'.

Must have been a bit of a kick in the bollocks for him that no one (that we know of) took a punt on him for £25m in the summer.

I think had City or Liverpool come in he would habe been off in a flash. In hindsight it might have saved City's season with Laporte being out.

Does make you wonder what his relationship with Poch was like because Poch played him every game he could this season, so didn't Poch want him?

The main quotes about the contract in case anyone is too lazy to click a button:

“Financially the club made a good effort that showed me they really wanted me so that gave me respect,” said Alderweireld. “I could maybe earn a lot more somewhere else, but then I chose loyalty, that’s worth something as well.

“I talked to my wife, we have a second kid on the way. First of all, I asked her: ‘What do you want?’ She said she’s happy to stay, she loves it here, but that I can choose whatever I want. That gave me the opportunity to explore everything that I wanted.

“But the more that I thought about a new episode somewhere else, the more I thought, ‘No, I just want to stay.’ I’ve always been happy here since day one. I’ve felt very wanted here and have a very good connection with the fans.

“Then, of course, the last step was the manager, who really believed in me. I had a good connection with him from day one. So all those small steps took me into the big decision to stay.”

His decision was certainly influenced by what her indoors wanted, plus the general lack of options for him at other clubs. But if he wants to say it was about loyalty, that’s fine by me. As long as he stays and can do a job for another season or two!

Well articulated and transparent about his thought process - not some cringy PR stuff

Well isn’t this going well. Another injury, great! Get Deli off, he’s just regressed so much. What an idiot getting booked like that.

It’s well to have an experienced CB at the club however Imo we need to upgrade ( if not Foyth who I believe given a chance will become a class CB)
We need to explore the market for a left side CB to partner Sanchez.

It would make interesting headlines if a player ever said anything other than fan placating blah.

Oh, look at fan reactions to Eriksen and to a certain degree Rose.... best not.
