Wonderkid at an Italian giant going through a sticky patch. Paratici must be tingling.

If we’re up there in Jan and it’s still going badly for him perhaps the picture looks very different for us.

Depends on how Conte and Paratici compare him to Lenglet (now Conte has worked with Lenglet), and also what Lenglet would cost next summer. One could argue that getting decent ball playing right footed CB as backup for Romero / Dier is more important than LCB (where we have Lenglet & Davies).

Surely this is all playing to our hands. He hasn’t turned into a bad player overnight. He is also very young. All setting up for a January bid surely?

Of course but the problem is that they will still want a massive fee, probably all the money we have available in the next window, so his form has to be taken into account.

Lots of young players look great and then nothing. Not saying it's the case here as I really don't know much about him but for clubs like us can we gamble at those fees?

I am not sure that the Lenglet loan for the season has an Option to Purchase included. I think he goes back to Barca thankful for any game time he wouldnt have got at the Catalan club and thereafter it’s a conversation regarding buying, taking in to account the loan fee maybe, and of course, his performances this season.

That is why I said one of the things it would depend on would be what Lenglet would cost next summer - we do not have an option.

It doesn't.

Interesting… I wonder whether we’ll see some developments in Jan or get an option added, seems like he’s one of Conte’s faves already.
Think it's something we'll review in the summer rather than doing anything in Jan (which I think partially explains why we pushed for a loan in the first place) as that keeps our options open.

We can assess whether players like Bastoni, Gvardiol etc. are attainable, affordable and willing to come. If not then we might opt to try and get Lenglet as a cheaper alternative.

Or maybe if Lenglet absolutely smashes it, we'll make him our number 1 target and then allocate the 50m+ extra that a Gvardiol/Bastoni would've cost to other positions.

I think Lenglet will become a key player for us and Barca will 100% need the money as they've sold just about every last piece of that club now and are still broke. Whether we then also go for Bastoni is to be seen and depends on whether Lenglet provides strong cover/competition for Dier as well as Davies.

As much as I liked the idea of signing Bastoni in the summer, I'm not sure how much sense it makes to sign an underperforming Italian CB from a team whose club badge he has tattooed on his body, for a fee that will have to be way above his actual market value.

Yeah if I had to bet, I'd say the most likely outcome is we sign Lenglet on a perm for a relatively cheap fee (15-20m).

Thing about Bastoni is, regardless of his current form, Conte loves him. So as long as there's a chance of him being available and he hasn't signed a new contract I think we'll push hard for him next summer if Conte is still in charge. As you say, I think his Inter allegiance will keep him there, though. Would probably take the club forcing him out, as almost happened last summer, to get a deal done.

The other expensive option, Gvardiol, looks out of our league. Unless we do something absolutely amazing this season I think he'll be off to Chelsea, or another club offering more money.

Have a feeling that Lenglet will be good for us, off to a solid start and it is obvious he has top ball playing skills. Time will tell how he defends. Would have loved to see Dier use him more against Arsenal as a number of times he played it down the right when Lenglet looked in much better position to recover the ball.
