For those who remember of who have heard of Alfie Conn, who played for us in the mid-70s, sad news that his father died today.

He, too, was a footballer and a very famous one in his time.

STARS: Willie Bauld, left, and Alfie Conn

An elusive and tricky inside-forward, Alfie Conn was loved by the Hearts fans for his tenancious style of play and feared by opposition goalkeepers for his powerful shot.

Perhaps best remembered as part of Hearts "Terrible Trio" forward line of the 1950s, alongside Wille Bauld and Jimmy Wardhaugh, he was a central part of the Hearts side that won the Scottish Cup in 1955 and the League Cup in 1954.

Born in Prestonpans, East Lothian, he joined Hearts as a teenager, signing from from Inveresk Athletic in 1944.

A serious ankle injury, suffered shortly after winning his solitary Scotland cap, against Austria, in 1955 curtailed what may have been the most successful spell of his career.

He recovered to play a bit-part role in Hearts' League title success in 1957-58 before transferring to Raith Rovers in search of regular 1st team football.

He retired in 1960 and had a brief spell as manager of both Gala Fairydean and Raith Rovers, as well as watching his son, Alfie, carve out a successful playing career at both Rangers and Celtic.
