There were dissenters even when we signed Toby from Soton, but he went up a level coming here. No was in why a Mawson or Bertrand couldnt do same.

It’s an interesting one.

One of my best mates is a Saints fan and generally rates their players fairly.

Because of that I was very much in favour of Alderweireld’s signing.

From what I have seen and read about Mawson I am in the against group.

I accept that is limited knowledge so wouldn’t be completely against if the club wanted him.

Players like Mawson and Bertrand are decent players but won't take us to the next level. Both are top 6 quality but we need better if we are trying to replace Toby and Rose. If we can't buty ready made quality then players like De Ligt and Sessegnon are the next best option as both have so much potential.

I kind of agree. Essentially a squad needs balance. It is very possible this summer we are losing Dembele, Alderweireld and possibly Rose.

That's three experienced players. Might need one or two experienced heads in there.

It's probably not what most want to hear but no player is at shorter odds to join us than Mawson. He is best priced at 6/4 although some bookies are only offering Evens. By comparison he is 7/2 to stay at Swansea and 5/1 to go to West Ham. Curiously you can get 10/1 on him joining Arsenal but he's as short as 3/1 with Betway which shows how little money is needed to move these markets.

Doesn't mean much. For the better part of all of last summer we were odds on to sign Barkley and most of the players we did sign at no point were odds ever even offered on.

I'd much prefer Tarkowski to Mawson. Been impressed with him this season.

Don’t think Tarkowski is cut out for a big side. He’s a pure defender - very limited in possession. Burnley sit deep and defend too. Very different job defending in a high line; I’d expect him to do a bit of an Ashley Williams if asked to play higher up the pitch.

Both Keane (who obvs played for Burnley) and Tarkowski both can produce very decent passes from what I've seen.

Sanchez is pretty much a pure defender as well and he's doing a good job.

Maybe I haven’t vocalised my point that well, but there are two different kinds of players there. Sanchez is a great defender who would do well in any system. Tarkowski looks to me like a player who is thriving being part of a Burnley defence that is a solid unit, just sitting deep and defending their own box. I’m not so sure he’d do so well in a team geared towards possession football - it’s an entirely different job. And whilst he has a good pass in his locker, he’s certainly not a ‘footballer’.

And in time honoured fashion I'll add 'but with a bit of coaching from Poch......'. I'm not saying he'd be right up the top of my list but just saying I'd prefer him to Mawson.

if we want more homegrown players why don't we take a look at our own academy...what is the point investing so much money on training and youth facilities if we need to buy homegrown players for the sake of meeting the quota...

I prefer De Ligt to Mawson. I know De Ligt is untested in the PL, but he looks like he could be a CB in the Toby/Jan mold.

If we can't get De Ligt then I would like Poch to give CCV a few games in the ICC and see if he could be a squad player/occasional starter for us next season. No doubt Mawson has more experience, but I am really interested to see how CCV does in the preseason after spending a year on loan. Last preseason he didn't look very confident/composed and was definitely not ready for the PL. This will be a big year for CCV, I realize there is a good chance he spends another season on loan, but his window to break into the first team is getting smaller each season. If we sign De Ligt, CCV will likely be behind him and Foyth.

I think Foyth will develop into a nice CB for us as well. He is really good with the ball at his feet and very composed for his age. Hope he gets more matches next season. I was disappointed he didn't get to play any in the PL.

Spammers about to sign Mawson for £20m.

Surely we should be looking at that deal to provide cover for Vertonghen.

Proven player, better than spending €50m on de Ligt who we are not sure will adapt well to EPL.

We are levels above West Ham.
