Just looking at the league table and we currently have 37 points - 3 more and we should be safe .

Just wondering if anyone knows, at what point last season we reached the 37point mark (or thereabouts)?

Ahhh it's nice to reminisce....

Been a couple of times in the last 20yrs when reaching 38points has been a genuine relief.........

 - I was wondering when someone would do this thread

Joking aside we shouldn't take top-flight football for granted - just ask the Toon fans....

Some of us have had too many years when the 40 point mark has seemed a long way off for way too long.

Some of us have put large bets on Spurs going down as the only way to ensure that they stayed up! Trouble is, now I'm wondering whether to bet on them finishing outside the top 4 ...

Actually from February last season we had a nice gentle run in with no pressure and the vague possibility of the Europa cup but nothing too tight to get excited about.

Somehow I can see this season's run in beinga real pressure cauldron with lots of squeaky bum moments; are you ready for it?:)

I suspect that we are already safe. In the last six seasons (apart from 2006/7) 37 points was enough to survive. In 2006/7, 38 points survived.

West Ham went down with 40, were not safe yet!

Actually 42 points (2002/3) but that was in a era before the top teams became so dominant.

I spent a bit of time after Christmas lunch with the BBC Predictor. I predict that 6 EPL teams this season will finish with fewer than 37 points. I also predict that we, Villa and Liverpool will come in a 3-way tie for 5th place with 70 points. Yes, 70 points may not even guarantee European football this season, let only CL football.

The old wisdom of 70 points for CL football and 40 points for survival have gone. Top teams drop fewer points and consequently struggling teams get fewer points. 73 points is now the target to give a reasonable chance of CL football (76 points in 2007/8).

I agree with this

I know my sig says otherwise, but there are so many good teams in the EPL, and conversely so many shite teams, the bar has been set very high indeed

Gotta root for Man Utd to take the League Cup so Villa or City (or god forbid Blackburn) don't take a Europa Cup spot.

It's only a Blackburn triumph that would be a fly in the ointment. I think that the Sky4, Villa, City and ourselves are nailed on for the top 7. Provided the CC winner and both FAC finalists are from these 7, then 5th, 6th and 7th will qualify for the Europa Cup.
