Amazon is close to securing a groundbreaking deal to broadcast live Champions League football in the UK from 2024, with highlights returning to terrestrial TV for the first time in nearly a decade in a midweek BBC Match of Day show.

The US internet retailer and streaming giant, which already has a broadcast portfolio spanning Premier League football, tennis and rugby, is understood to be set to split the UK rights with existing holder BT Sport in a new deal with the governing body, Uefa, running from 2024 until 2027.

The BBC is understood to have secured rights to Champions League highlights for the first time, which it will reportedly broadcast in a new Wednesday night edition of Match of the Day.

Wow. If BT loses all the UEFA competitions that could really affect subscriptions. What else does BT Sport have?

Amazon are lucky they've got Arsenal: All or Nothing series coming up or else there'd be no reason for any of them to ever subscribe.

I don't like this, watching live football on Amazon hasn't exactly been smooth, their player is shit and too aggressive.

I’ve had no issues with the quality of streams on Amazon for games. But I suspect the more they show the worse it will get. Initially at least.

Their coverage has been decent though. Nowhere near as much waffle of fluffing as on Sky for starters.

This report does say BT sport will share the rights so I think talk of their demise is premature. BT themselves may want to sell the channel but I expect someone else to pick it up as a loss leader.

BT's lost a lot of money on their sports coverage, which is a shame as I think it does a good job, but they were likely on a hiding to nothing trying to take people away from Sky, which is probably what was needed to make a profit from it. I have the subscription because it started out free as we have broadband with them, but obviously right now people have less and less spare cash to spend on multiple subscriptions.

The production on the PL games that Amazon has shown has been utterly dogshit, hopefully they'll up their game for an entire CL season instead of a handful of PL Christmas games.

BBC have announced on their website that they have the highlights from 24-25 onwards. Will be interesting to see what they do with it.

Don't think it's all doom and gloom for BT , fortunately Amazon will only get a few games...

"BT Sport will remain the home of top flight European football until 2027, it was confirmed today.
We will show 533 of the 550 games available with 113 more games - an extra 27% - for customers to watch each season in new format changes coming to the competition."

Wonder is Amazon getting Champions league rights would mean they'd like to show a few matches in their own named stadium ?

BT show Serie A , Ligue 1 plus Aussie football , US baseball , boxing, rugby , loads of other minor stuff like lacrosse, hockey, T20 cricket and when were last in CL you could watch our under 19's in the CL youth competition where they would play same group stage teams as the 1st XI played.

Anyway they are hardly losing any games just 17 over three years I believe.
Hopefully Amazon will only pick our home games so I can avoid watching it on Amazon and watch the game at The Lane.

BT Sport is my favourite sports broadcaster, Their UI of app, interface is the best I don't really put a lot of weight on punditry as I don't listen to it. They were also worried about the investment they made when the ESL was mooted.

Sky owners Comcast are not interested in Sports.

Amazon broad-casting is trash.
