The way I see it, any team with top 4 aspirations and in the situation we find ourselves should not be going into a key part of the season with 1 striker plus a makeshift reserve.

I have fingers and toes crossed we're in for someone.

Do people think we'll sign or take the MASSIVE gamble of winging it with Defoe plus Dempsey??

We did not have Ade for West Ham, Liverpool and Fulham and we won all three.

Jetting in: Sevilla president arrives in London in bid to flog Negredo

10 Jan 2013 16:03

PLUS: AVB admits defeat in chase for Damiao, but Jose María del Nido will try and sell his star to the North London club

The free being tossed around is about £15m. Have to be honest and say I haven't seen a lot of him, but he's got 65 goals in 156 games for Sevilla (including 11 already this season) which is pretty good. Though, you would expect a good return from any 'top' striker in La Liga. Looks very promising I have to say, a lot of papers are picking up on this one now too.

It's sad when a club like Sevilla has to sell because of financial trouble (no doubt due to the ridiculously biased tv viewing in Spain ie Barca and Real Madrid) but without sounding harsh, it's not really our problem and we should try and get a bit of a bargain if possible given that Sevilla need to sell!

It's a bit worrying that we don't even have a back-up youth striker like Harry Kane available. As for Dempsey, he played as a striker three times last season for Fulham, scoring a hat-trick in one of them. Should be a decent enough option if Defoe gets injured, but yeah I think we really do need another striker.

‘A club from England went to £20million on deadline day for Negredo,’ revealed chairman Jose Maria del Nido.
‘Negredo was not interested in the offer. That was not a day to do business.’
Does seem like the type of thing Levy would do... Same article claims we failed to do a double deal with Lyon to take Gomis as well as Lloris.

Adebayor won't be missing that many games. Defoe and Dempsey should be fine for now, plus we have the likes of Lancaster and Obika (if we registered him) and the even younger ones who could go on the bench and be ready to be called upon.

If Bale and Lennon keep up their good form, and the likes of Dembele, Sandro and a returning Parker keep providing the solid platform we should still have enough of an attacking threat to get through these games without it being a big deal.

I would like a striker, but Togo won't go far, and Ade can come back into the fold. Dempsey and Defoe can cope.

We certainly shouldn't, but we are spurs.... *shrugs*

If there is way to shoot ourselves in the foot or cock things up, we will seek it out with everything we've got.

DL ain't gonna change his mode, so it will be what it will be. I wrote this window off way before it began, so I'm surprised and v.happy that we got Holtby - that's already a bonus in my eyes. Not expecting anything else. Would be a fool to imo.

Almost exactly how I see things. Holtby was a surprise, and from what I've seen on youtube, and from the comments I've read, it sounds like we've got a fantastic player.

I can't see us signing anyone else, and expect we'll probably reduce the strength in depth by selling/loaning a few out.

I share you're sense of doom about not strengthening this window.

Ade is missing for a month and even when he returns there is clearly a problem between him and AVB. It's not like I can even see ade responding positively to the situation as he's such a poor delicate little flower, bless him.

That leaves us with Defoe, who despite being in good form this season, is not really suited to playing up top on his own.

An injury or suspension and were left very light. Dempsey is not a striker, despite having a good goal scoring record, he can't play with his back to goal. Sure he can "do a job" as some people have said but teams in the top 4 have players who excel in their positions, not ones who merely "do a job".

I don't see why we can't bring someone in on loan to consolidate the squad and give us options from the bench, it doesn't have to be a £20m signing.

Not that it means anything really and it's very unlikely to happen but apparently Sneijder is trying to put off the Galatasaray move and is holding out for a move to England with Tottenham the bookies' second favourite to secure him (behind Galatasaray). Not trying to derail the thread but just to report the news

Yep. I made a friendly wager on here before the window. I hope I have to pay out but so far...

We don't do big deals in Jan.
