I doubt any official stats exist

all you can use are surveys - which people will dispute anyway (see the recent debate we had on surveys, samples and standard deviations

I can tell you if you are a Toon fan, stats show they have more fans than us, if you are a Villa fan, stats show they have more fans than us, if you are an Everton fan, you get the picture

but i was a bit baffled...and would be interested to know how info was found and if is accurate!

I don't think it would really matter for the top three/four biggest fan bases if it was British or English, they will all be English clubs anyway.

I was in an argument with Sunderland fans about who was bigger, and so thought I'd find the stats

Indeed I can hear them clambering over Hadrian's wall already - be very afraid

as I indicated earlier Google won't really help - cos these stats don't exist in any accepted form- they can only be surveys and fans won't have it if those surveys contradict their views

for example celtic and rangers wouldn't allow anyone but pool and mu to have bigger fan bases than them, and celtic especially might even argue there
