2 months ago, I would have shouted down anyone with the audacity to suggest a summer overhaul of our playing staff. The domestic season was impressive, a few slip ups aside, and we were on the verge of the Champions League quarter-final after a truly wonderful performance in the San Siro. 2011 seemed was going to be a good year.

With the memory of Crouch’s scuffed effort finding the corner of the Milan net still fresh in our minds, we’ve managed to self destruct at completely the wrong time. Hope of the now visible cracks being covered have all but been ended by Man City’s impressive form post-Kiev, and we’re now left wondering if we’ll be playing European football at all next year.

In light of our slump, I feel it’s gotten to the stage where we should be scrutinising our players to a greater extent – to the extent of taking off our rose tinted Spurs specs and really debating the merits of keeping each and every one at the club. A few shorts month ago, I was struggling to see where we could improve. If I can put any sort of positive spin on our loss of form, it’s that certain players have now lost the indisputable confidence and trust that they only recently had, and we can now improve areas that would not have been improved on before.

Anyone can see that we have a squad far too big for it’s own good. Not only are we spending hundreds of thousands of pounds a week on the wages of fringe players (admittedly many are currently out on loan), but discontent among those on the sidelines seems to be increasing.

Goalkeeper

IN: Manuel Neuer (£23,500,000)
OUT: Heurelho Gomes (£8,600,00), Ben Alnwick (free), Stipe Pletikosa (end of loan)

I love Gomes. I’ve been his biggest fan since day 1, and have defended him against everyone from Gooners at work to Spurs fans inside White Hart Lane. However, I’ve finally accepted that as brilliant as I think he is, he can be improved on (just about). Manuel Neuer is, at 25, the perfect investment. He has proven himself on both the European and World stage, and though his stock will never be higher, we simply won’t get another chance to sign him. While his heart is clearly set on Bayern, we should be looking to capitalise should the move fall through (and it may well do, with Bayern seemingly not too keen on what would be a massive fee for a keeper). The money is admittedly on the high side, but we’d essentially be securing ourselves a World class keeper for the next 10-15 years. Neuer’s injury record is good, and though some will disagree, I am not a fan of stifling a young keeper’s progress by benching them. I feel older goalkeepers are better suited to sitting on a bench for 36 games a season and coming in when needed – which is why i’d keep Cudicini as Neuer’s back-up.

Right Back

IN: Gregory van der Wiel (£9,600,000)
OUT: Vedran Corluka (£8,000,00), Alan Hutton (£6,000,000), Kyle Naughton (£3,000,000)

Many will disagree, but I think we lack true class at right-back. In fact, my current first choice is out on loan. While Corluka, Hutton and Naughton are all good players, none of them are at the level we need to be aspiring for. Gregory van der Wiel is probably the most sought after right-back in Europe right now, and in the name of squad improvements, I see no reason why we shouldn’t bring him in. If we’re going to play with one up front, we need full-backs who are better offensively than the current crop, and from what I’ve seen, there aren’t many better than van der Wiel.. With Kyle Walker returning in the summer, I would be happy to cash in on the other 3.

Left Back

IN: Fabio Coentrao (£21,000,000)
OUT: none

I have a lot of time for Assou-Ekotto, but left-back, like goalkeeper, is another area that we can just about improve on. As I said, our full-backs need to be every bit a second winger when we’re in possession; which is why I’d spunk such a huge fee on Fabio Coentrao. It’d take a wonderful player to oust Benny from the left-back spot, and Coentrao seems to be right up there. I’ve also been completely seduced by the idea of he and Bale swapping positions fluidly as the game unfolds.

Centre Back

IN: Mats Hummels (£10,000,000)
OUT: Sebastien Bassong (£7,000,000), Ledley King (free), Jonathan Woodgate (free)

We’re massively overloaded with centre-backs, and are currently spending over £100,000-a-week on Ledley and Woody. As sad as it may be, I’d be looking to let both move on, as we simply cannot continue to build plans around either. It’s a horrible thing to say, but we need to move on for our own good. I would also ship out Seba, who seems to me a player whose form has suffered as a result of being regularly out of the team. He’s spoken publically about his displeasure at being benched so often, and for me, he’s been poor when given opportunities. Mats Hummels is making a big, big name for himself at Dortmund, and crucially wouldn’t cost as much as Subotic either, who seems to get more plaudits than his defensive partner. For me, it’s an area we could improve a lot in without breaking the bank.

Midfield

IN: Andrea Pirlo (free), Ibrahim Afellay (£9,000,000)
OUT: Wilson Palacios (£12,000,000), Jermaine Jenas (£9,000,000), David Bentley (£8,000,000), Jamie O'Hara (£5,000,000), Niko Kranjcar (£8,000,000)

Midfield is an area that we are totally overloaded in. What’s more is that these players who aren’t even getting playing time still hold relatively high market values. With Sandro looking more and more at home by the game, a sharped anchor role with Andrea Pirlo would do wonders for his development. With Pirlo now 31, and set to leave Milan at the end of the season, I can see a Naybet/King relationship between the 2 (lest we forget the effect Naybet had on our young centre-back). Afellay on the other hand has struggled since his move to Barcelona, and wouldn’t cost the World. A skilful and technically gifted midfielder, he’d be able to fill in on the wing if need be.

Wingers

IN: Alexis Sanchez (£23,000,000)
OUT: Aaron Lennon (£20,000,000), Danny Rose (£1,000,000)

This is one area that most will disagree with me over.
As much as I love Aaron, he just doesn’t do enough for me in our current formation. With only 1 up front, you need goals from your wingers, and Lennon just doesn’t seem to have that in his locker (to the extent required anyway). Alexis Sanchez is everything we need in a winger – goals, assists, versatility, trickery, and raw pace.

Many will think I have left us awfully short on the wings, though I will explain my reasons. Most areas of our squad will have 2 players, each fighting for the starting place. Our wing positions are not one of them. Sanchez and Bale would be the unquestioned starters in their roles, with others replacing them only when injured/in need of a rest. The team would be largely set up with Sanchez and Bale in mind, and so our others wingers would see less playing time than other ‘squad members’. That in mind, I see dos Santos and Townsend (along with Afellay and Coentrao if needed) as able understudies.

On the subject of Giovani, I feel that in our current system, with wingers being given a lot more freedom than in previous years, he has something to offer us. To put it another way, he is currently valued at around £4,000,000, and I think we’d get more out of having him in our squad than we would from that money.

Strikers

IN: Radamel Falcao (£19,000,000), Romelu Lukaku (£18,000,000), Johan Elmander (free)
OUT: Jermain Defoe (£12,000,000), Roman Pavlyuchenko (£10,500,000), Peter Crouch (£9,000,000), Robbie Keane (£6,000,000)

While bigger fees have been quoted for both Falcao and Lukaku, I think they will both eventually go for closer to the £20,000,000 mark. Both players, along with Elmander, are so much more suited to the role we’re asking our current strikers to play. None of our front line are good enough with their back to goal, thought Falcao and Lukaku have both excelled doing just that. Elmander would essentially come in as good squad cover with minimum outlay.

TOTAL SPEND: £133,100,000
TOTAL INCOME: £133,100,000
NET SPEND: £0

So what the hell was that (long winded) shit all about? Simply to illustrate that there are a lot of areas of the team that could be improved… and it wouldn’t cost the World to do it, either.

Do you think we need a squad overhaul, or would be benefit from stability? Are we indeed still only a few players from success, or are the problems more deep rooted.

I generally skimmed that as we both know what my attention span is like at the best of times, but I have to largely agree with you. except for the whole David Bentley for £8m bit. surely nobody is that mental (except for us) to pay anywhere near that for Bentley in his current form! We probably should have offloaded him to City when they were sniffing around.

Urgently need: 2 strikers, right back.

Not so urgent but need: CB to ultimately replace King/Wood/Gallas, intelligent creative wide midfielder, box to box CM who can score and create 8-12 per season, LB, 3rd Striker.

No we are not as good as some may want to believe but on that note no team in the PL is as good as many on this board make out. Our big problem this season has been a constant stream of injuries to key players along with a completely misfiring forward line and more recently a keeper devoid of confidence.

All we can hope to do is to rectify these problems and lets see where next season takes us. Get in a one or two new strikers, another pacey wing option and a keeper good enough to challenge Gomes for a starting role, we could be right up there next season; fail to address these areas we may well not be.

VDV,Modric,Bale,Gallas , Sandro potentially

5 players who in my opinion cant really/easily be upgraded on, so could quite easily bring in 6 whole new players of their quality, im sure we wont though. striker seems to be the main focus, and rightly so

Currently the only players that I have ANY confidence in are -

VDV,Modric,Bale,Gallas and Sandro.
My team for next season would be built around these players.

For me any of the rest can be sold and upgraded on.

No we are not as strong as some people would have had us think, but were not far off. We need a new training regime, 2 Strikers and a RB as immediate fixes.

We urgently need competition for Gomes. He has cost us about 10 points this season.

The old saying goes...

"You're only as strong as your weakest link"

...our weakest link has been our 'strikers'.

Sort that part of the team out and I think the rest of the squad is more than capable of competing.

I agree with the general sentiment that we could definitely shuffle the pack and improve the squad without spending too much, although some of your valuations are a tad optimistic. I wouldn't necessarily agree with that amount of changes in one window though, or indeed the specific changes you've made.

For a start I count only five home grown players in your 25 man squad, and one of those is Townsend! Why are people forgetting this so easily. If you replace our loanees, strikers and drop one or both of Kind and Woodgate we start to look very thin, let alone flogging Lennon and Jenas as well!

A new strikeforce is the priority. I agree with two of your choices in Falcao and Lukaku. Two we're no doubt looking at, as well as Berbatov, Osvaldo, Hulk and many others.

For me then it's all about improving in any position we can. If a top player is available at a reasonable price and we can make room in the squad then we go for them. the only untouchables in our squad are Gallas, Sandro, VdV, Modric and Bale. Players who could be available in the summer who we should be talking to, even if the chances are slim. We picked up VdV when noone else did, so you never know.

Neuer - Won't be cheap and is likely to attract interest from top sides but he's world class and has more than ten years at the top ahead of him.

Stekelenberg - One year left on his contract so will be available for a reasonable fee. He's not as good as Neuer but he's a very decent keeper and at that price we could probably afford to keep Gomes and let them fight it out for the season.

Sahin - (Available for £5.6m this summer, i'm sure there'll be a queue of suitors, but its worth a look for sure. People will say he's not a priority but in my opinion you can't have enough technically superb midfielders in your squad. Arsenal collect them for fun and if they had the defence and strikeforce to match they'd have probably won a title or two recently.

Young - 18 months left on his contract. I won't say he'll be cheap, but his price will be slightly less ridiculous. Replaces Bentley and Kranjcar in one, homegrown, prem proven and would fit right in. I'm pretty sure we'll be in the queue for his signature this summer, whethe people like it or not, just depends who else joins really.

Marin - Gettable from Werder. Probably similar price to Young or cheaper. Perhaps has more potential than Young, but also carries more risk.

Elia - Same.

Parker - Tricky one this, but I think if room could be made in the squad, i.e Jenas moving on I guess, AND he was available for a reasonable price, circa £5m, then I would bring in Parker. I wouldn't want it to be to the detriment of Sandro, rather I'd like Parker to play a supporting role to Sandro, and even play alongside him in certain games.

Same for the backline I suppose. Aside from a backup leftback I think we're just about covered, but if a top player is available then you snap him up.

Makes sense, but I think you've overvalued a few of our players considerably (Defoe and Bentley being prime examples).

For me, Gomes, for one reason and another, is on the way out. I'd say the same, as brilliant as he can be (And he played an enormous part in getting into the CL) he has made error after error this year. I believe a keeper can be found who can pull off some of the saves Gomes can, whilst also not making such enormous blunders. We also need to target a keeper who has command of his area and will catch 9 out of 10 crosses rather than punching 9 out of 10. Catching a cross is massively underrated, it takes all the pressure off whilst punching just causes confusion, giving no time to regroup. I've gone for Foster, but I'm not completely sold, just someone I've thrown out there.

I personally am right with you over Lennon. Again he was excellent last season and has sparkled at times this year, but for me, if we are going to continue with Bale on the left, then the right cannot be another outright attacking player. The two best years we have had in my Spurs lifetime have been with Davids on the left and Luka on the right. I don't think our defensive is powerful enough, nor our central midfield able to control possession enough for us to be so out and out aggressive. For me, we need to slightly alter our formation, replacing Lennon with someone who offers more defensively and also will get forward and score more goals. I'm aware that asks a huge amount.

This is what I'd envisage for next season.

--------------Foster-----------
Corluka---Dawson---Gallas----Benny
--------------Sandro----------
--------Luka------Sneijderesque---
VDV-------------------------Bale
----------Drogbatovcao-------------

For me those three midfielders will take the majority of the strain, Sandro sits and protects, with Luka and 'xxx' far enough forward to attack but also far enough back to help Sandro.

Luka needs to get a few more goals and if we can bring in that box to box player alongside him who can get a few goals too, we are already up on our goals total. I'd treat Bale and VDV as luxuries. VDV is a busy **** who can close down and Bale is happy to track back. I think as BC rightly bangs on about, both need to have a little more discipline in them, but I want their primary game to be about getting forward. Closing off areas and anticipating passes is just as important as getting in peoples faces.

The huge question this year will be upfront. It doesn't take too much of a glance at the stats to show that with anyone even half decent we'd be neck and neck with Citeh, maybe even a little clear. FFS even Odemwingie would have put us bang in contention.

We are looking to go forward, we need a talismanic striker who can connect, head, work, score - few and far between I know, but this side can take that next step up if you can find that gem that can do all those things. Keane is gone, and I'd suspect we'll see Pav or Defoe follow. We won't be signing two world stars (Reverse psychology - work ffs), but I think we'll see one big name. Pav, Crouch, Drogba, Falcao would suit me.

OpenHeartZoo, in what way does Marin carry more risk than Young?

Marin would be an unknown quantity to many in the league and if we do improve/change the way we play he'd be more difficult to contain compared to Lennon.

He has played on the right, my point however, is not having two wingers, but having a winger and someone who can drift in and hold

totally agree

we have a few useful players under that like dawson, walker lennon kaboul huddlestone but imo we need at least 5 or 6 top quality signings to challenge next season.

right back, left back, center half
winger and 2 x strikers .

Fair play for typing all of that out but I don't really agree with much of it and some of the valuations are pretty whack, we're not going to bring in/sell that many players, not even half.
