Harry Redknapp has told Setanta that he believes Tottenham can challenge for a top four spot next season.
Having spent much of the first half of the season battling relegation, Spurs are now just three points behind seventh-placed Fulham and have a realistic chance of breaking into the Europa League.
After the controversy about fielding a weakened team in this year’s Uefa Cup, Redknapp has insisted he would be delighted to qualify for Europe this year – but he has revealed that his biggest ambition is to push for the Champions League next season.
“It’s a squad that’s capable of pushing the big four next year,” he told Setanta.
“Someone’s got to break in there sooner or later.
“I still feel we need one or two additions – and I’m not saying that so people can go, ‘Oh yeah, Harry just wants to bring someone in...’
“I can see that, in one or two areas, we’re still that little bit short of being able to break into that top four and that’s the areas I want to improve if I can.”
The likes of Darren Bent, Tom Huddlestone and Didier Zakora have all warned that they may have to move on in the summer in search of regular first-team football, but Redknapp believes having competition for places is the mark of a top side.
“That’s what good teams do,” he said. "Good teams have good players pushing for places in the team.
“At Man United, Sir Alex has always got competition. Liverpool have got competition.
“That’s why they’re up there – they’ve got that competition. You need that.
“Unless [the players] want Champions League football, they can’t do any better than Tottenham.
“It’s a club that’s going places again. If we can start next season as we’re finishing this season, I think we’ll have a great year next year.
“Competition has made the difference.”
It's all nice and positive but i now hate any talk of top 4 finishes as it get's peoples expectations too high. Then it's a case of a bad start and the knives come out. Nothing i want more but you have to be realistic
