Arteta for England?

With the imminent retirement of Owen Hargreaves and the loss of form for Joe Cole perhaps the Fabio Capello should attempt to convince Mikel Arteta to play for England since he qualifies on residency grounds.

Such a suggestion comes to light after Craig Kieswetter joining the mass of South African born players in the England Cricket Team. I looked up which players qualify for England's Football Team, another is Charles N'Zogbia who maybe in a couple of years time could slot into the left hand side, a cliched problem position for England. N'Zogbia has actually admitted he would like to play for England, if given the chance.

I'm wondering if England are missing a trick in not capitlizing on foreign-born talent that could improve the team.

What do you think?

It is a bit desperate. If England was a club side, I'd have Arteta in there straight away. Lampard and Barry are not technically good enough on the ball and cannot really create in that central two. Wednesday showed this, where Carrick had to come on and actually get the midfield passing forward.

We are looking at improvement only, for instance the argument that Almunia and our own Carlo Cudicini could better James, Green, Foster or Hart isn't a strong one, however Arteta could give England an extra dimension. Obviously this is unlikely to happen, but what if?

I'd love to make arguments for the inclusion of Hudd or Jenas, if both were fit and firing, but neither of those two players, nor the likes of Cattermole, Matt Taylor, Scott Parker or Adam Johnson bring the attributes that Krafty mentioned that Arteta could provide.

I was surprised to hear N'Zogbia mention something about playing for England the other week. Can't see any of them happening though, defo wouldn't want Almunia any way

Its unlikely to even be considered, i think one of the FA bods said they were not interested in players granted residential citizenship.

But then look at Spain, arguably the most important component in turning them from habitual losers to champions was Marcus Senna, a player with no links to Spain other than playing there.

Arteta is unfortunate that he is very very good midfielder in an era where Spain has 3-4 great ones. He would do an amazing job helping us retain possession, something which always costs us in these tournaments.

Other nations do it, Portugal have Pepe, Liedson and Deco all of Brazilian descent. Italy have had Mauro Camoranesi from Argentina. Germany have had players from both Poland and Turkey. I don't think it should be completely ruled out but I can see it causing hysteria in the media.

Carrick, foregoing any major injuries, i can see being a regular for England once we find the right shape, and it's accepted that, just because they do a job for their domestic sides, Gerrard and Lampard aren't what we need to tie our midfield together. He is a proper tactician, is calm and can read a game incredibly well without trying to be the general. Personally, and i know this gets said a lot, but i think we have a really promising crop of players just coming into their prime and to start looking abroad for potential pre-pat's to push into the team would be doing them a terrible dis-service.

It wouldn't feel right and if he ever played badly or did something wrong he would be slated more so than ever.

crap thread

You know what? This post of yours ^ really riles me for two reasons -

1. Most other posters in this thread would disagree with you as this thread has a vibrant debate going on, whichever opinion is held.

2. You have absolutely no need to vent your opinion if it is not constructive - better you just click on another thread and see if its topic might inspire you to contribute.

Arteta would be a great addition. Our managers aren't English so what's the difference really. For some reason I don't think Capello fancies Carrick much either. He seems to have Gerrard, Lampard and Barry all ahead of him which is madness imo. Carrick should be one of the first names on the team sheet. Scholes for me is still the most complete midfielder we have by a long shot, one of our best ever.

Arteta is phenomenal. Would be a great addition but he wouldn't surely consider himself English so that's a no brainer.

CNZ would be in my England squad for the World Cup, no questions. Has everything we want in a left sided player and would be my sole cover (apart from Barry and Milner) for Ashley Cole to boot. Question marks over CNZ's attitude but he got out of Newcastle sharpish so he can't be a total fool.

He still wants to play for Spain so all power to him. Not that it's likely he'll get in their squad.

Sounds Typical of the FA to not even consider it :duh:

Capello said he was not interested in 'nationalised' players. And anyway, its too late to bring them into the setup now. They would need more time to integrate and, more importantly, for the media to stop going on about them being foreign.

As for Carrick, I dont think he can compete against quality midfielders. Then again, I dont think any of our central midfielders can compete with the likes of Spain or Brazil's midfield. Neither Carrick, Lampard or Barry are mobile enough in the middle, nor good enough at winning the ball from the opposition. Spain would cut through our midfield.

Probably bias, but its a shame Hudd got injured. I think he could have been a surprise inclusion as his passing (distance and pace) is better than any of the others and would speed up our play

Not strictly true. He said "For me he is Spanish" about Almunia.

Which could be construed as a polite way of saying "For me he is shit".
