To me, diving has always been as serious as the 'professional foul' and should receive the same punishment. Trying to gain a goal by cheating is just as bad as trying to stop one. It should at the very least be dealt with retrospectively with all the TV footage now available.

It would stop if a player got sent off as opposed to just being given a yellow.
UEFA/FIFA could cure diving in an instant.....

Not really, it's down to the ref to feel it was a dive or not.

Sending off's would happen all the time - how many times do you see someone who has been booked for diving, who was contacted?

Defoe last week vs Hull in the cup, taken out at knee height yet booked for diving!!

Exactly.

It's actually pretty difficult to stop, players go so quick, the tiniest of knocks can send them flying, but one thing I hate is that leave the leg in thing to trip over the defender.

If that were the case then two or three times last season,we would've been down to ten men , when bale was being booked for it.i think Gareth was booked five or so times last season for simulation. On three of these occasions, replays show that there was contact and the booking was wrong....at least with a yellow, the ref can make a shit call and not ruin the match.
I think a red card could be done retrospectively,as it only really becomes obvious when it can be seen from a few angles, slowed right down.Making these decisions in real time is very tough, unless its really obvious.

Retrospective action is what is needed.....and they've got their nice, shiny, new panel of judges all in place so can we see the FA/EPL take some action the next time someone cheats please!?!

yeah retrospective action. This is blatantly cheating and players should receive at least a three match ban after being reviewed by a panel.

It's almost impossible to police in instances like this. Young did get a little tug back, so even if they'd looked at it later they would have been hard pushed to overturn the decision / punish him. Unless you want to get into the murky area of punishing players for exaggerating contact. In which case you may as well just book every player at the start of the game for simplicity.

What is 'simulation' if it isn't that? As far as I'm concerned, if the Ref thinks there has been any exaggeration he should ignore the entire incident, whether there is contact or not. I'd also like to say that 'contact' is completely different from a foul (unless you're playing basketball).

I honestly think that with the introduction of the 3 Referee Panel to investigate after match video footage (which has quite rightly just banned Riether of Fulham for 3 matches) that any obvious dive should be able to be looked at using the same video evidence and if proven a ban of 12 matches should be handed to the perpetrator.

People say to me that 12 matches is too long, but my response to that is.

A) If you don't dive, YOU DO NOT GET BANNED!!!
B) If the ban is for a damaging long period, it will force the Managers to ensurer that their players do not dive. If David Moyes knew that Ashley Young would get a 12 match ban if caught diving, I am sure that he would be able to make him stay on his feet.

It's because he's so top-heavy, can't stay upright. Needs to work on his quads....:coffee:
