It was an important win. A win we desperately needed. It was an ugly, unpretty victory, but its just the kind you have to sometimes grind out.

I think Pochettino's squad has too many passengers & I believe that a number of those won't be here next season. The likes of Adebayor, Kaboul don't look like they've earned their way into new contract extensions to their current deals. Vertonghen's ambivalence is simply shocking.

Not enough urgency. A lack of purpose & energy from a lot of the players. Our best players of the night were, by a distance, Mason & Kane. I'd say even the perpetually lethargic Capoue had a decent match.

I can only think that the Poch is giving his squad a more than fair crack of the whip, so that when he gets rid of them they will have no excuses. I also think that it's a message to the board that there is a significant amount of rebuilding to still be done.

Well done to the chaps. Dug in.

However, after spending god knows how much money post Bale, we still look wretched in terms of both performances and shape to be honest.

Ryan Mason is in my opinion the stand-out player at the club right now. Desire and quality. I think that is embarrassing and we have some hugely over paid players who need to have a look at themselves.

I think Soldado should be given a dozen games in a row now before making a final decision on him. Kane has to start, so too Chadli, Ade dropped.

I think Eriksen needs to be dropped for a period at the moment, from the league teams anyway. He's off form and it's too important a position to persist with. Lamella, I'm sure, has to pay dividends soon. By Christmas he'll be knocking them in.

Too predictable and one dimensional from midfield going forward, and piss poor at finishing. Whatever many on here think about Townsend at least he showed pace and running at a piss poor Villa side.

Fuck know's what the next team is going to shape up like but i'd like to see Soldado make a start with Kane, Strombo in midfield with Mason and any fucker that can kick a ball start ahead of Kaboul. He is i am afraid not fit for purpose.

I agree, we lack a ball winner to partner mason, a ball winner at the back, a winger. We need to play Kane as he is not scared of the goal I think the other two are. we seem to lack aggression, no pressing and closing down in midfield.

Poch has to change his mind about Ade and Kaboul, both of whom are not good enough at the moment. Lady Luck smiled on us today, but really, our defence are a shamble, our midfield cannot deliver a telling final pass, and our strike force too unreliable (apart from Kane).

You are asking the manager to reverse course on two of the three captains - not saying you are wrong in asking the questions, but that is a tall order to expect from the manager.

How do you know our strikeforce are no good if the midfield is not delivering?
I agree with you that the defence is awful yet people seem to be looking further up the field for our current problems.

For my two pence worth....

Capoue - he's not a destroyer, can't pass to a high level, isn't quick and doesn't create. I just don't understand what he brings to the team. While I completely understand midfield is about balance and partnerships but with Mason being very progressive and active in his play he does need a sitter along side him. Something that Benji can do and at least effect the game in a positive way.

Rose - I've lost count of the times teams break on us down our left side or worse we conceed when exploiting out left side. Kyle N is looking completely assured compared to Danny atm.

Robbie S - I just

It's interesting/telling that it was the three home grown lads who stood out and made the difference. Kane, Mason (who was clearly MOTM despite Kane's goal) and Townsend when he came on.

Far from the 3 most talented (at least at this stage of their career) yet their desire and effort win the day.

As for the rest. Oh my God. Truly diabolical.

Totally agree. Townsend can be infuriating but at least he is a presence. He can press high and has the intensity, pace and desire to afford the full back some cover.

Mason and Kane are the first names on the team sheet right now for me.

I would be tempted to try and bed these lads into the system with Bentaleb and use the season as transitional. We just look so lacking in fight without them.

A shambles would be an upgrade on today's defensive performance.

On the two rare occasions in which the final pass got through, Ade was stupidly offside with the first, and shot too tamely with the second.

Well, Poch has to bite the bullet as the two said captains are not performing, and performance is what counts.

We certainly bring the best out of most opposition teams. It's about time that Stambouli made a start, I think he can get the ball moving faster and into the right areas also we need a terrier in there to put a stop on opposition attacks. I don't think starting with Kane will necessarily get us scoring. In the PL Kane has seemed lost at times. When he came on for Ade today our attacking become more predictable. I would like to see Dier and Fazio start as a centre back pairing it can't be any worse than Verts and Kaboul!
