Lenglet vs Van de Ven I know which High line I would put my money on.

Also Son vs Watkins... Watkins is good but is anyone better at exploiting a high line than Son?

I think of the match we had at Villa a few years ago under Conte where Sonny got a hattrick and Kulu added a goal. We were deadly on the counter. I think we could do that again, but would expect us to concede 1-2 lol.

Funnily enough we've lost three straight against them since that result, so hopefully we can flip it!

Porro back is huge. Aside from Richarlison this is probably our best team. Would probably say it is with Son up top. Villa played last night too so need to show more energy.

Hopefully Son can manage to stay onside this time though. Didn't he have something like 17 goals ruled out for offside when they came to us?

Son will be feasting with Porro’s through balls against Villa’s high line.

Feeling much more confident now. As he makes such a difference to how we play.

Emerson is solid, but he’s far too limited on the ball.

It’s equally about the timing of the through ball, not just the run. Most of our midfielders take at least one touch too many.

There were a couple in the home game where PEH & GLC took an extra touch. Madders would be much more confident playing it first time.

Vicario
Porro - Romero - VDV - Udogie
Bissouma
Sarr - Maddison
Deki - Son - Werner

Subs: Austin, Royal, Davies, Dragusin, Bentancur, Scarlett, Johnson, PEH, GLC

Depending on how Sarr's back is doing, I'd have him start over Bentancur for this one. Still think Johnson is better off the bench and I expect Deki to have a much better game as Villa will be more open and attacking team, which can work in our favor.

You’re right. Udogie in particular is terrible at simple balls for Timo to run on to, mind you he’s great at everything else so hard to give off too much

Our 1st half performances need to better again soon. Especially on sunday.

Aston Villa would be top of the Premier League if first halves only counted this season, winning 47 points before the break and going in ahead in 13 of their 27 matches. It's a clear tactic from Unai Emery to play aggressively from the first whistle as since he took over in October 2022 - a 54-game sample size - only Liverpool and Man City have created more of what Opta define as 'big chances' in the first half (55).

Thanks for sharing that. Really insightful. Seems like this is going to be a high octane game. I wonder how Ange is intending to approach Emery's approach. They can be very aggressive, but as we saw when we played them at home, we were very unlucky to lose. And we were demolishing them in the first half, until Cash's tackle took out Bentancur. They were so vulnerable, if you bypassed their press. Makes you wonder if Ange will start with Johnson ahead of Deki for this game. He, Sonny, and Werner can exploit the space Villa will leave behind in their high backline. And we have a number of players who can pick that pass.

His press conference kind of hinted at him not starting yet, so you may well be on to something!

Three points here would be absolutely massive from a psychological perspective. If we win this I think we get fourth. Time for Ange and the boys to lay down a marker (he says hopefully...)

A lot of talk about us exploiting their high line, I think it's a disservice to Emery to believe his Villa side aren't able to change their approach. He'll be more than aware that we will struggle with a low block and a draw suits them more than us.

For me it goes one of two ways, both teams go for the jugular and it's a goal fest or the importance of the game to both teams creates a nervy, disjointed performance from both and it'll come down to individual errors.

I do wonder whether Emery will tinker with his tactics re the low block.

I voted a Villa win to f**k with my own psychology … either way, therefore, I won’t be disappointed
