Lambert is suffering because of the silly spending of Martin O'Neill, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...Neill-spent-120million-years-Aston-Villa.html - some terrible purchases there. Reo-Coker for 8.5m! :poop:

They did similar in the last few years of Doug Ellis, one of their managers spent a fortune on shit players and the next guy inherited a crap team with not much money to spend on making it his own.

David O'Leary. (y)

Had this discussion on the radio a few weeks back. Guy I'm on with is a big Celtic fan and won't hear a word against MON. "They finished 6th three times in a row under O'Neill. Look at where they are now."

I pointed out the spending, and also that this was 6th before we were all that good and City got their money. Plus it's only 6th and one of those seasons Villa were 3rd for a long time and should have finished in CL positions.

Bet they regret giving up a season's shirt sponsorship for that kids charity now.

I said at the time that Lambert had chosen a terrible time to leave Norwich and go to Villa. A few on here ripped into me for saying that.

I know Villa are a bigger club than Norwich with better facilities and stadium but their wage bill under MON was astronomical and they had to let around 12 players go for free a couple of summers ago and the only players they could sell for money were their genuinely talented players.

Tough time for Villa and they just might get relegated. Benteke, Bent and the other one (Weinan?) have a few goals in them but they have little else.

I saw them earlier in the season a couple of times and thought they were the worst team i'd seen. I put them down for relegation and haven't seen anything to change my mind on that front.

Actually I feel for their fans to be honest, they are in major trouble, once the confidence and fight goes they will struggle and that seems to be going a bit now.

I like Villa, partly because of Kennedy admittedly, but they just seem right in the preniership. imho they have a great manager, but just maybe their side too young too survive this year when the premiership is really levelling out.

I reckon they'll stay up. Just about. The way the league is going at the moment i'd be surprised if teams down there will even need to hit 40 to survive and if they can get out of this mess, the young players will be better off for the exposure and will grow as players from the beatings they took.

I watched the Villa game on boxing day down the pub with my mate who's a villa fan. Loads of spurs fans in there and he was obviously the only wand in Villa shirt and when we went 4 nil up, I was like "Jim, do you want me to run home and get you a t-shirt?".

Plus they've sold and not replaced Gareth Barry, James Milner, Ashley young, Stewart downing (was a different player at villa IMHO) plus the likes of petrov , cuellar, etc.

At least levy replaces most of ours when they go!

Apparently, and I'm laughing as I write this, they are interested in signing Yann M'Villa.

Pah ha! Can you credit it? M'Villa playing for........Villa! Brilliant!

Curtis Davis for £10m  West Brom mugged them.

After O'neil left they sold Milner, Downing and Young for £50million profit, so that article is kinda misleading.

Davies was one of the hottest prospects at the time.

He shouldnt have sold Ridgewell and Cahill imo

two years actually. 2008 world financial crisis must have hit Lerner HARD

I quite like Villa really, and hope they stay up. They do seem to be combusting in comical fashion at the moment though.

There is a big difference here.

Under MON in his first season Villa bought Reo-Coker for 8m, Petrov for 6.5m and then Sutton, Carew and Maloney for low fees at the same season as buying Young for 9.75m. If Reo-Coker was on 40k a week then when he was released on a free transfer he had cost the club 18m in fee and wages. Petrov, Carew, Sutton and Maloney also all failed to recoup any money.

The next season he bought Marlon Harewood for 4m, Zat Knight for 3.5m and Routledge off us. Once again all players that cost them decent wages and recouped nothing.

The next season (2008/09) they spent over 30m and sold 600k of players. Curtis Davies 8m, Sidwell 5m, Cuellar 7.8m and Heskey 3.5m all cost a lot in wages and recouped nothing. That loss covers the 25m they made on signing Milner that summer.

Next season they sold Dunne 5m and James Collins 5m and Downing for 12m. They sold Downing for 8m profit but this was eaten up by the other expensive players they bought.

Next season they bought Bent for 18m, Makoun for 6m and Ireland was around 8m as part of the Milner deal. In the next 2 seasons they let a lot of players go for free and low fees.

Don't forget that during this period their wage bill was 2nd highest in the league when compared to turnover.

It's no wonder they didn't replace Milner, Downing, Young and Barry. The other signings ate all that money up.

The more I think about MON's time at Villa the more I am in shock that he is not horrendously villified for it. Three 6th placed finishes is hardly enough for the financial destruction of an ever present in the Prem.

That is absolutely ridiculous money and MON had the nerve to quit over a lack of support
