subject: Andre Villas Boas reveals his and Levy's growing anger with Luka Modric
source: sportwitness

The Spanish press appear to be way ahead of their English counterparts when it comes to the Luka Modric story and pouncing on stressed out managers at airports isn't beyond them. AS and Marca both sent journalists to London this week to get some insight and it was the former who stuck a microphone in the face of Andre Villas Boas at the airport as his Spurs squad went on pre-season tour.
At first the manager was complimentary about the Croatian "He's good, very good. I tried to sign him last summer for Chelsea, so you can imagine. He will be a great loss. He's a player who can make a difference, who gives great clarity to the game when the team needs and can play in various positions."
The Portuguese is obviously a big admirer of Modric but certainly isn't happy with the tactics he's employed over the last week to try and force a Real Madrid move through "I think Modric is wrong. This will go against him.
He has worsened the situation with what he is doing and now the president is very angry, it's also not a good time to catch Daniel Levy. He is in the U.S. because his wife is ill."
Daniel Levy is a tough negotiator and he's had a lot of personal difficulties recently, his mother passed away and now his wife is ill, his anger towards Modric is only going to grow as the player throws further toys from his pram.
Andre Villas Boas also spoke to the journalist about the current midfielders at Real Madrid and gave them the impression he may be interested in a move for Lass Diarra as part of the deal, but Lass is on huge wages which could prove a problem.

  • Sad as it's confirmed that Modric using this way to force his move, clearly he is given the green light to leave at this time, why losing his Popularity at the club and the fans ..
  • One ITK claimed that Levy is about to take 1 year break as Spurs chairman due to his wife illness, it's look like this is going to to happen.

I have the feeling he wont be going anywhere this summer. His contract is to long for him to force a move.

I can't see Levy backing down again this season tbh....RM and all the other clubs are gonna have to pay what we want for him...or just simply forget it!

Levy will stick to his guns, after this Modric saga is over we will realise that the biggest loss to our club this summer is Ledley King....:(

Who does AVB mean by "the president"? It sounds like the Real guy, rather than Levy.

That is a fairly public washing of dirty laundry. Sometimes just saying someone is a triffic lad can be be the more diplomatic course. If Modric does not leave AVB is going to have to work with him.

nope.

I would rather know just how big of a shit Modric is rather than 'he's a triffic lad who is a bit disappointed'

Yup...don't see that Levy has any choice, really.
Taking it that this is what has happened (and I'm not convinced it is), Modric/whoever is advising him don't seem to have a clue what type of hornets nest they are sticking a big stick into and wiggling about. Joe Lewis has already said, last Summer, that he will back Levy to the hilt - even if that means destroying Mdoric's career. If I were him/them I would be treading carefully, acknowledging that Levy has been more than willing to listen to reasonable offers for him, and that, ultimately, THFC are more than entitled to ask for and expect reasonable recompense, at the going rate, for a player of this quality.
Funny, innit, how Real seem to be employing the same tactics that Sevilla tried to get GDS - offer a lowball offer (in coparison, Udinese's offer was massive), and get the player's determination to join that one particular club to try to force Levy to accept.

Anyway, ATM, I'm kinda hoping that a deal is close (or, maybe, his participation in the Euros has got him a bit longer before joining up) so Levy/AVB have told him to stay put rather than go to the States, and the meeja are just jumping on his abscence with a 2 + 2 = 5 approach (and that would be a turn-up for the books). Because, as it is, his shenanigans last Summer, his kyboshing of our first two games and his IMHO failure to always put 100% in mean I will always see him as a great player who played for Spurs rather than a great Spurs player, and certainly not the Legend of the Lane he coulda become. And what makes it most annoying is that we are desperately unlucky not to be in the CL next year, and it would be nice if he acknowledged that (even if just to ease his stance a little by way of showing us a little more consideration), let alone that maybe he coulda made a difference in a few of the games at the back end of the season and we coulda finished third.

Levy will stick to his guns, after this Modric saga is over we will realise that the biggest loss to our club this summer is Ledley King....:(

In the grand scheme of things, losing Ledley is immense - these should be his best years. But I can't help feeling that we will also benefit from maybe having a regular central defensive partnership to rely on from now on.

I don't understand why clubs don't do a bit if research and realise who they are dealing with. Look at the deals Daniel Levy has done when selling players. He always gets the deal that he wants. £18 million for Carrick, £19 million for Keane, £30 million for Berbatov, refusing to sell Modric last summer. We are in a much stronger position with Modric then we were with Berbatov and Levy was still able to get top dollar for him. I know they are Real Madrid and managed by the special one but they should just 'put up or shut up'

No point to keep him if he doesnt want to be here, however I would set a time limit for him, make sure everyone knows. If its nt done by August 7th to Spurs satisfaction, it isn't going to be done. The Berbatov debacle was a disaster, Frazier Campbell!!!

We have to put Spurs first, delaying till Aug 31 is ridiculous.

Im so very ambilivant about Luka at the moment, 50% of me wants the guy gone but the other 50% says keep the little shit here and make am example out of him.
Obviously him gone is the best solution but i think Daniel will play it correctly and always do what is best for Spurs in the end...this includes getting top whack.

I think at this point I just want him gone, partly because i'm pretty sure that his transfer money has been earmarked for a replacement. And seeing him rot out in the development squad would just be depressing. Alternatively, if they did cave in and let him play in the first team, he'd probably be putting in no effort. So nobody would win!

I'm quite amused by how candid AVB has been here, as he's pretty much managed to rule out Modric being able to get the sympathy in this one. It's pretty much: "He's being a bloody tit and we're being reasonable. The wrath of Levy will be fearsome to behold".

Someone else asked :sneaky: if we could do what Chelsea did with Mutu, sack and sue the fecker. As long as Joe Lewis followed up on his statement of last year that he would back Levy so we didn't suffer financially from making an example of him, I would love this to happen. Make an example of him so he can't actually play football at all while the case is ongoing - but we would have to be 99% certain that we would win.
Any legal eagles out there know what grounds exactly we could sack and sue him on, if any, and what chance we would have of winning the case if necessary.

p.s. As you will figure, I am sick of the rat.

Its possible he'll still be here for next season and if he is he will have to give his best otherwise his stock will fall and football is a fickle business. Big Clubs move on to other targets etc.

I'b be quite happy to keep him now, we'll have him over a barrel - its a dog eat dog business. Fuck him, if he plays up and isn't good for squad harmony he'll only end up hurting his own career.

There is no way Levy can be bullied on this but no doubt Madrid have encouraged him to do this to weaken our position - futile though, they should of been paying attention last summer.
