Bae had been consistently good more than any other spurs player since Redknapp took over pretty much. Modric, Vdv, Bale, any number of centre backs, right backs and forwards, none have produced their best as regularly as he does. If you think his best is not good enough then that's another matter, but the guy has been superb for several seasons running. Maybe only Parker matches him for consistency. Does BAE have deficiencies? Definitely! He doesn't stop enough crosses and he isn't the best crosser. However, every player has drawbacks. Modric wasn't the same away as at home, Vdv wandered around the pitch a bit too much (I hated seeing him at DM), Bale can be very selfish when better options are available and Sandro is too ambitious sometimes with his passing considering its just not a strength of his. BAE is a superb left back and will rightly take his place in the first xi when fit.

Add to this that Jan is our best centre back and the idea of keeping him at left back unnecessarily is simply laughable because in doing so we'd be voluntarily weakening that position with no reason to, not to mention not getting the best out of him in his best position.

No! BAE is quality on his day but when he turns up half asleep he's a liability! To be a pro player your concentration levels should be switched on for 90mins. Something BAE can never do.
I think with Vert playing the way he can at LB, I think BAE, is thinking hmmmm, me needz to concentrate like a boss.

Am I the only one who saw Vertonghen get raped by Nani on Sunday? goal conceeded down his side, gareth bale constantly covering him, nani beating him often, verts had to wrestle him to the floor which was a stonewall pen.

he's a decent stand in for sure, but this knee jerking is deadly

It was a decent performance by a central defender...but some folk are going overboard a tad.

the problem with BAE for me is that he has always been a 'good' footballer but an average defender.

Thank you very much.....so glad that someone knows what he is talking about. Benny has been our most consistent player over the past two seasons and some guys even selected him in their All Time X1. By far, the best left back I have seen at Spurs in my 30+ years of supporting my beloved team. My favourite player, legend and thrilled to the bone that he plays for us. I am also very glad that most opposing teams and fans think that he is crap meaning that he will be with us for years to come.

Simply not true. A flawed defender yes, I think if you search the planet you'll find no more than 3 or 4 fullbacks without flaws owing to the nature of the role, but he is certainly above average. He let's in too many crosses yes, but he wins a lot of tackles (including last ditch in the box tackles) and sweeps behind the centre backs superbly. He also makes more interceptions than any player I've seen, and his ability to hold the ball with his amazing touch and technique means that he constantly relieves the pre..ssure on our defence when in tight situations, an invaluable defensive asset. His pace also means that he is never caught out by through balls for wingers to run on to. My only issue with him defensively is that he stands off when someone runs at him and allows crosses in.

And he's not a good footballer, he's an excellent football. He has amazing touch and ball control, he makes beautiful incisive passes into midfield (or brings it into midfield himself) and he plays his winger (Bale) in superbly more often than not. He also overlaps beautifully

The old boys around me at Spurs genuinely can't decide if they prefer him or Knowles.
