numbers don't seem to matter these days

They only really mattered when the standard formation was the 2-3-5 from which they arose. You'd have

11---10---9---8---7 Forwards
-------6---5---4----- Half backs
---------3---2------- Full backs
-----------1---------- Goalkeeper

so the centre forward was number 9, full backs 2 and 3, 'centre half' number 5 etc. It was the standard for teams to be numbered like this and it was considered poor sportsmanship the first time a manager had the idea of sending his team out with the shirts mixed so as to confuse the opposition!

Given that formations are all but dead these days, numbers only really serve the purpose of identification.

I always used to play up front with the number 3. Still believe that defenders think that you were meant to be in defence and been told to play up front and it gave me an early advantage.

Yeah read that too... so if correct he will definitely be giving up the number 3, but not sure he will be taking the number 9 as the wording suggested he just took what was available for the tour, not the number he necessarily wanted.

I am really pissed off to say the least. Was goona get Disco Benny but the guy in the shop said they could not put letters below the number.

Surely the club realise that there are many fans who would have already purchased a Bale 3.

Losing the 3 shirt would make sense as he's no longer a defender. That said, there's not many options available, even though 9 makes even less sense than 3. I'd say a 7 or 11, but they belong to Lennon & Rafa, so no chance......
I stopped getting names printed years ago cos every time I did it we sold the player within weeks!!

He will most likely get the number 14 shirt when Modders goes. That said he could take number 10 and Ade be given number 9 if/when he joins.

Personally I would like to see Bale 14. Firstly because it'll help us to forget that rat Modric, secondly Bale could follow in the footsteps of the great Ginola, and thirdly because if Bale wears number 10 I fear he will feel an urge to play centrally more often!!

Yes, was wondering what number he would take thinking that 1 - 11 are 'first choice team' and that the available ones, 2, 5 and 9 make less sense than 3 but 14 is a good shout as it has previously been worn by star players, Modric, Ginola and of course Erik Edman!

He wear 11 for Wales, should be in a position to demand whatever shirt he likes at Spurs as well.
Rafa can take another shirt number, he preferes both 10 and 23 above 11.

Seems like Bale will play up front against Red Bulls

Bale is at his best hugging the left touchline and cuts in occasionally for a pop at goal. There were some games last year when he thought he was Henry playing all over the place but getting into everyone's way.
