In a recent poll here most people thought we'd finish 5th or 6th with our squad as it currently is so I really don't agree with us being "written off", it's quite realistic in terms of where we are atm.

Having said that, I think that we're still better than Liverpool and if Arse lose both Fabregas and Nasri, as looks very likely, I'd say we're better than them too. I know I've totally contradicted myself here

I'd say that it's not us being written off, it's Liverpool being massively overhyped, as they always are, just because they've spent loads of money and have Dalglish as manager.

Think that's fair - we do have the 6th best squad at the moment.

However we're only 2 forwards away from having the 3rd or 4th best.

Strangely enough, I'm quietly confident we'll finish in the top 4 this season. I really don't think the players Liverpool have signed since January, barring Suarez, are up to the quality of the top 4. And as Marty has said, if Arsenal lose Fabregas and Nasri they're there for the taking.

Let them write us off, and let the expectation we had on our shoulders all of last season fall to Liverpool. Because I honestly think we'll be the ones laughing this time next year.

I fancy us next year. I Don't think Defoe will be as crap as he was last season, bale is maturing, VDV has has a full pre season, might get more than 5 games out of Ledley, decent competition for Gomes if he messes up, Luka has a point to prove, walker can bring some pace into the team. I know we haven't made a big signing but that doesn't mean we haven't improved IMO.

Totally agree. The one thing people keep underestimating is continuity. Have been saying it until I'm blue in the face. Yes they have strengthened, Liverpool, but its more because they've absolutely needed to...its also a long term rebuilding process acquiring young British talent.

People see the money being spent and automatically think that equates to instant success - it doesn't more often than not.

I expect Liverpool to do better than last season obviously, but not better than us or Arsenal.

I see fourth between us and the Goons come the business end of the season.

We have a side that know each other well and will continue to get better in terms of understanding...we need that forward and we will definitely compete at the upper end of the table.

Exactly, and if we do manage to improve the forwards...well we could be a dark horse to push right at the top.

"If Modric stays and is happy, then Spurs will be in the top six, eyeing the top four and worth a trip to the bookies for one of the cups."

Yes. Written off. What an absolute cad.

erm, he's right. We finished 5th last year, we've bought no striker and we could still lose our best midfielder. To say we should finish 6th is just plainly logical. To say that if we keep our best midfielder we could finish higher and win a cup is only being "written off" if you're viewing the world through Spurs coloured specs.

Do contributions only count as good if they don't quote from the article in question and agree with you?

:razz:Yeah!

Not really but at least you put some rationale into your reasoning. I backed up my opinions with reasons why I believed it, as did you. That's my definition of good contribution. Also with that quote "eyeing the top four" suggests that we are only there or there abouts but not really challenging in the way they normally describe everton and villa, I feel for the reasons above we are still better placed than some.

Fuck it let them right us off. We didn't deal well with the pressure of being 'title contenders' last year, less pressure might help us.

How are we written off exactly? 6th is about right surely? Maybe 5th. We certainly wont get 4th with this side at present.

Based on? Let's call it a difference of opinion. Maybe written off was a bit harsh but It was also following on from seeing a sky poll of the top 5 "who will win the league" and guess who wasn't included. Just surprises me as we have a good team and last season without our run of draws would have easily finished in the top 4. I know it's been a poor window and we all know we need a striker but our team isn't as bad as some think

lets be honest they dont rate us the media. if we had picked up 18 points of west ham blackpool and wigan we would have finished 2nd. if we had done that the media would still write us off.

let them. let us stay as dark horses play our brand of magic watch VDV bale and modders pull the strings and watch our improving back four gain in ability and we will quietly prove the doubters wrong.

4th even 3rd are possible with this squad. additions were it matters and 3rd is on even challenege city and utd all the way.

keep the faith

we can do it in the PL this season.

Ever the optimist I believe if we get the right striker in we could compete for the top 2, if not then 4th place is definitely possible with our present squad.

Whilst it would be nice for our squad quality to be recognised rather than the media wank over Liverpool, it's probably better for us that not much is expected. When we got 4th nobody expected it and there was no expectation, yet we had an amazing season. I am interested to see how the media would react if we buy a quality striker though

I'm happy we are going under the radar a little this time. Many teams came to the Lane trying to defend and take a point because they thought we were a potent force. With a little less expectation teams may be a bit more open against us and we will cut a few more teams up.

It helps also that the potentially weaker teams like Swansea, QPR, Norwich, Newcastle (have to throw them in there with their decemated squad) and Wigan are all attacking type teams with their best players being attacking players. So we should do better against the strugglers this year than we did against the bottom clubs last year.

I think we could well get into the top 4 again this season. Fuck all the 'expert' predictions, nobody can say for sure at this point. I get quite a kick from reading spunk filled opinions from Liverpool lovers in the press as we sit above them and beat them at their place.
