Sky Sports News understands David Beckham has been left out of Fabio Capello's first England squad for the friendly with Switzerland.

The former England captain has been training with Arsenal in a bid to earn selection for his 100th cap but he has not played competitively for more than two months following the end of the Major League Soccer season.

Capello has a history of dropping the former Manchester United star, jettisoning him from the Real Madrid set-up after he signed for the Galaxy before, like Steve McClaren, recalling him as the season reached fever pitch.

But Sky Sports News understands the door has been left open for Beckham to go on and earn his 100th cap once he has regained match fitness.

The squad isn't announced until 15.30.
KNown SSN and their announcements about transfers, I'd wait until then to see if he is in the squad.

Disgraceful decision if true. Beckham has given more fight and passion to our National side than anyone else in the last few years.

He deserves his 100th cap and it's only a friendly, not the best way for Capello to start, there will be a lot of people fans and media unhappy about it if it's true.

I get that he hasn't been playing, but he's been training hard with the scum to keep fit for England and is more deserving of pulling the shirt on than any other Englishman imo.

If he doesn't get it against Switzerland, I'm sure he'll get it against someone else.

Not a disgracful decision in my opinion.

Capello has come in and set out his stall and saying "You have to be playing week in week out, and on form, to make the squad" and not in their just on reputation.

There is no doubt, he will eventually get his 100th cap, but it has to be deserved, and playing regularly.
This will be applied to every player, and not just Beckham.

That may be so, but Capello is his own man, he doesn't listen to or take crap from anyone, he'll make his own decisions and if he decides its not worth bringing Beckham into the squad then he must know something we don't. Owen it looks like has been left out too. Gutsy imo, but its good to see someone not afraid to buck the trend, you have to trust his knowledge of the game, time will tell if he's right in what he's decided.

As an outsider, I think finally England have got their man, and I expect ye to be successful with Capello in charge.

Total balls.

He's earned 99 caps and he needs to earn his 100th too. You don't earn it by giving up on your career and going to play in the McSoccer Disney Cola Cup League.

Definitely, Beckham needs to stop living off his past, when there's players like Bentley, Lennon and Young slogging their guts out in the hardest league in the world week in week out, you can't expect to just walk into the team because you once scored a goal in the last minute against Greece.

Some dodgy football writer from the Guardian is on Sky news at the minute bitching about Beckham being left out and pretty much throwing a strop about it saying how Capello is going to have him and his other media cronies on his back about it. I'd say Capello is quaking in his boots.

To be fair the Sky news people are winding him up so fair play to them.

Seriously though...

What has Owen done that deserves a place, that Beckham has not?

Owen is playing competitive football, that might have something to do with it.

I agree with above, that Beckham will get his 100th, but as of now, just training does not make him match fit, and whilst it might just be a friendly, its still Cap's first game in charge. I'd much rather see him pick what he see's as his best "in form" players and shake things up than pussy out and give someone a century just because he "deserves it".

good work Capello, dont sway to tabloid demands, be your own man, thats exactly what we want.

Beckham is gooner scum trash - his wife is ugly, he hangs out with that nob Tom Cruise.... BYE BYE BECKHAM...

Oh and who really cares about England? Same crap, diffrent manager! Keeping King and Woodgate away from that squad would be what I would have Comolli working on (some beurocratic bull about them being not fit enough blah blah)

Assuming that we qualify for the WC in 2010 it's very unlikely that Beckham will be there. With, among others, SWP and Lennon playing well it seems obvious to me that these younger players will be the ones that Capello will be selecting for his qualification campaign. Beckham has earned 99 caps, and as an experienced professional he must expect to earn his 100th. I hope he gets it, but I wouldn't pick him after 2 months without competetive football. Not even for a friendly. The national team coach has little enough time to work with his team so there is no room for charity caps.
