Tottenham to offload David Bentley as they chase Manchester City's Martin Petrov

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is preparing to make a swoop for Manchester City winger Martin Petrov in a player-plus-cash deal which would see David Bentley move the other way, according to reports.

By Emily Benammar

It is the second time in as many seasons the London-based club will have made a move for the Bulgarian after he rejected a £4.7 million transfer in 2007 when he played for Atletico Madrid.

Snubbing Tottenham, Petrov made the move to Eastlands but his contract expires at the end of next season.

The 30-year-old's value is likely to have dropped significantly following two serious knee injuries this season, which resulted in him only making 14 league and European appearances.

Meanwhile, out-of-favour Bentley, who only arrived at White Hart Lane from Blackburn last summer, has struggled to secure himself a regular starting place under Redknapp.

Aaron Lennon's form is a major factor which has kept him sidelined, and Redknapp has made no secret of late that he expects the 24-year-old to move on.

The club is also being linked with Djibril Cisse after the French striker severed all ties with Sunderland after the last match of the season.
According to the Guardian, Redknapp will consider any offers for Roman Pavlyuchenko and use the money acquired from his departure to secure Cisse's services.

The 27-year-old signed for Sunderland on a season-long loan last summer but the option to make the deal permanent has been rejected by the club which narrowly avoided relegation last weekend.

It is understood that Cisse is eager to remain in the Premier League despite having two more years on his contact at Marseille.

Petrov would definitely add something to our squad, whether he can maintain fitness or not a big if.

He'd definitely add to the wage bill and add to the strain on the treatment table.

No thank you.

If we get him in addition to some moolah for Bentley... yeah, why not.

£10m and a sometimes fit, therefore sometimes player Petrov would be better than a Bentley who the manager does not rate and therefore he never plays.

However, £13m for Benltey which we could re-invest in the left winger or central midfielder of our choice would be even better.

Best of all would be 13m for Bentley and a promise not to play hard ball if we want Ireland for around the same amount should he be interested in a move.

I like Petrov alot, but he's just not worth the risk. 30 years old and he's quite clearly injury prone, it's not worth the high wages he'll probably want.

I doubt he would. He wanted big wages before when we didnt sign him - seriously doubt he could command that now tho. 30 years of age, another knee injury on top of that he had at madrid - i doubt anyone would be prepared to offer him big wages.

Most likely will be happy to ride out his contract at city.

Also i would level a good wager that we will not get 13 million for Bentley.

Yep, this. I'd sooner we kept hold of Bentley full stop if selling him meant getting in unsuitable players for Spurs in possible exchange deals. And Kendall has nicely outlined why Petrov would not be suitable for us.

Petrov is not injury prone, he has had 2 bad injuries in his career so far, the 1st at Athletico which he fully recovered from before he joined City, and the one he suffered when Bulgaria played him the whole match when he was coming back from a minor injury and was not fit enough to be played that long.

I think he still has a lot to offer and he has a sweet left foot :)

strangely enough, if we are to get RSC, then it may well be worth hanging on to bentley - otherwise we have a prime headerer of the ball with no one to put the crosses in.

It would be typical tottenham to sign RSC, sell Bentley and not sign Downing.

bentley every time.

no huge wage demands, english, not injury prone. I believe bentley will come good if he stays (but it doesnt look like he will be)

Can't say i'm a big fan of Petrov's. He's as temperamental is Berba, but without the genius. He used to be lightning quick, but has lost a fair bit of pace. I hope we steer well clear of that one, i'm sure we will.
