Manchester City negotiating for first refusal on Lionel Messi

/ Transfer news 09/08/2009

A report in The People this morning claims "Manchester City are negotiating hard for first refusal on Lionel Messi after failing to sign the Barcelona superstar this summer. Mark Hughes was ready to pay £100million for the Argentinian, but was told he did not want to make the switch."

Scott Piecha adds in the Sunday tabloid: "City were unwilling to be publicly turned down again by one of the world's top players so they have asked his father and agent Jorge, as well as Barcelona, for an agreement which would see them have the first option to sign Messi if he ever wanted to leave."

Manchester City have been knocked back in high-profile bids for Kaka, Samuel Eto’o and most recently John Terry. Mark Hughes and the Manchester City owners are still desperate to bring in a world superstar to Eastlands.

Messi has reportedly agreed a new contract with Barcelona which will see him become the highest paid player at the Catalan giants. He is expected to earn 9.5 million euros per year compared to Zlatan Ibrahimovic who earns nine.

The Argentine schemer will sign on at Barcelona until the end of season 2013/2014.
