It is only a week away and I know we have Wigan to come first, but I have been trying to work out how Harry is going to set out the team vs Madrid. My team would be for balance:

Gomes
Corluka Dawson Gallas Bale*
Pienaar Hudd Sandro Modric
VDV
Crouch

If Hudd makes it I think that 4/5 in midfield have enough battling qualities to allow us not to go 4-0 down (at least not let the game be over in first 45) I have * Bale as I honestly think if we put BAE instead then Bale should be dropped as we need to be compact. By having Bale at LB it would give us an opportunity of a counter-attack if he nicked the ball with space- and would provide the pass we would lack from the ommision of Lennon. Then at around 60 minutes when we want to grap that away goal that could be all important- sub Pienaar for Lennon Hudd for BAE/Bale. We would still be solid but allow fast counter-attack from Lennon, Bale, Sandro
Gomes
Corluka Dawson Gallas BAE
Lennon Modric Sandro Bale
VDV
Crouch

I think that is the best we have- and is good enough to play Madrid and win.....however.....Barcelona..... I dont think I could choose a side to beat them...unless we could borrow Messi, Xavi etc

Huddlestone won't be ready, he's been out for so long he won't be match fit.

For me is like to see:

Gomes
Corluka Gallas Dawson Ekotto
Lennon Sandro Palacios Bale
Modric
Crouch

Pretty sure Palacios just had surgery and is defo out injured. Til 9th April apparently.

Hudd featured for 80 mins against Barnet yesterday, he may well feature against Wigan at the wknd so you couldn't rule him out playing. He'd bring a calmness to our midfield but having said that, probably a better idea to aim at having him fully fit and ready for the home leg.

I would imagine it'll be Modders and Sandro in CM and then any 2 out of Pienaar, Lennon, Bale or Niko on the wings depending on who's fit cos both Lennon and Bale have dodgy hamstrings.

At this point I'd say this is the likely lineup.....

Gomes

Charlie Dawson Gallas Ekotto

?????? Modric Sandro ??????

VDV

Crouch

About 3 and half tons of brick and mortar packed into the goal mouth should do the trick.

And Glenn Hoddle as referee.

Yes Lennon on the left and VDV on the right pack the midfield and plenty of size in the middle. We can throw Bale on for VDV after 70 minutes to try to hit them on the counter.

For me, Charlie has looked a little ropey in the last couple of games and I think Hutton will bring us more energy in what could be a very high-octane match. I think Hutton is a bit quicker than Charlie and at the speed at which Real will attack, we could use his pace to get back and defend as well as hit on the counter.

I'm certain Crouch will start but i think Madric would struggle more with Defoe

I'm not sure if Crouch will be as effective against Pepe and Carvalho, Pepe is a beast in the air and Carvalho knows Crouch's game; his biggest advantage over European CBs is that they don't know how to handle him, this won't be the case IMO.

He still has to play though as he is our best hold up striker, it'll be upto the midfield to get in and around him but not over commit.

If, and it's a big if, Hudd is fit enough he could sit in front of the back 4 with Sandro. Crouch would be supported by Lennon, Modric and Bale.

1) Scoring and not conceding;

failing that

2) Not scoring but not conceding either.

Glad to clear that up for you:grin:

Hudd has been out since the start of November and I cant see him starting in Madrid. I would guess a sub appearance against Wigan, and maybe another sub apperance against Madrid depending on the circumstances - but I cant see it.

I would expect him to start against Stoke at home next Saturday, and then against Madrid at home a few days later. Thats the way I think Harry will manage that one, building up his fitness gradually over the next two weeks or so.

We will need to be compact against Madrid and set up to obviously hit them on the counter...similar to Milan. With Palacios being out I would start Jenas alongside Sandro to protect the back four. Madrid move the ball very quickly and Jenas will have the energy to get about them in the middle.

VDV on the right but tucking in and Modric behind Crouch but dropping deeper when needed will really conjest the midfield and make it difficult for them, but we will need to be vigilant that we dont expose ourselves in wider positions too much.

Lennon on the left cutting in will bamboozle them a bit, and its another goal threat from that area of the pitch.

Bale was wrecked after 60 mins on Saturday, I would bring him on for the last 20-25 mins, could be a master stroke.

The aim is always to keep the tie alive for the return leg....set up compact and to exploit them on the break.

Thats the team I would choose. However if Harry is feeling really bold he could always play Lennon on the RW, VDV on the LW and Bale at LB. However I fear that will be far to exposed.

I would too if Hudd hadn't been out for the last 5 months, it takes time to build up fitness levels after that amount of time. He'll not be 100% match fit until he's played at least half a dozen games or so at a high intensity.

In any case, it would be:

Hudd
Sandro

VDV
Modric
Lennon

Crouch
