If I had a wish granted, it would be to bring that team forward in time, get them up to pace, then unleash them on the league. Title challengers every season IMO.

My wish would be on a more than football selfish note to, and hope I made and took a few different routes in life.

Football is so different today, in those days when we got back from away games we would have a pint or 2 in the white hart, and 9 out of 10 times the players would do the same.

The pitches they played on especially over the winter make today's pitches look like carpets

@Shea yes there were bad days under Burkenshaw, and the team that got relegated, and failed too win the old Div2, but a couple of seasons later we had 4 very good years, that like Redknapp we fell away on a few occasions but we won trophies.

@Barry Mead, there was 1 sub at the time I started going 1974 (don't know when it was 1st introduced), and yes 42 games

Premier League only we scored 188 goals in Harry 3 full seasons and in the three since he left we have scored 179

Whereas at the other end of the pitch we conceded 128 under Harry and in the following 3 years we conceded 150.

For me it's defensively we have slipped since Harry's time.
have we slipped since Harry's time or just Post Ledley??

I'm sure there were many poor games under Burkinshaw too
Not sure what your point is I saw poor games when Billy Nic was in charge

We never won the league so we lacked some consistency
You can work out how many seasons have gone by since we won the league so not really relevant to what I was saying

I'm sure there were times where we lost games we shouldn't have against teams we should beat and I'm sure there were games where we didn't turn up and play as well as we could
Same under all managers but the degrees are different when taking into consideration the tools available (players) so I remain with my point

Them games are probably swept under the carpet in the nostalgic memory of fans just like those games under harry are now days
Agreed

For example - wasn't Burkinshaw the manager who got us relegated initially and then failed to win the second division title when we gained promotion back to the top flight?
Were we promoted ? What is the point See point about tools available

We were a very successful cup team under him and by all accounts the most exciting glamour side of the era but the fact we never won the league suggests to me there were periods of inconsistency too just like under harry
I think this is a repeated point. I have said that I think Redknapp did OK but nothing better It is in my view having watched Spurs since 1960 his time in charge in over hyped considering the times they were played in. There were some very good games that I really enjoyed when Redknapp was in charge and high on the list of memorable games but there were too many games in his time, (sorrybut repeating) that given the players he had the job he did was just above average not great. I recognise those that are a lot youngee than me wont have had the opportunity to witness some rockin times.

My point was in response to the statement regarding Redknapp ' s time in charge being remembered more fondly than it really was and many poor performance being swept under the carpet that I'm sure the same can be said about Burkinshaw ' s era too

@guate posted this in the ITK Discussion thread. It was a good post and I liked just about all of it except the bit in bold:

I know there's this fallacy that every game under Redknapp was a swash buckling fiesta of of dynamic football and we have mysteriously wiped the 80% of ho hum stuff we played that was gilded by a piece of individual brilliance from Modric, VDV, Bale or Adebayor etc from our collective memories, as well as the the failure to win 9 home games in his last but one season, losing to teams like Wigan, West Ham, West Brom etc. and our abysmal record and performances against top teams.

But does anyone who remembers the early-mid eighties really think we played better football most of the time under Redknapp than we did during that phase under Burkinshaw or even Pleat ? The Perryman, Roberts, Hoddle, Ardiles, Villa, Galvin, Archibald and Crooks years pissed it for me. We were like Arsenal have been under Wenger, the team that played football more stylishly than anyone in the league for a few seasons, we were beautiful to watch and not just on the odd occasion, but most weeks. And we won things (two FA Cups and a Euro trophy, and another final). Even that Pleat team played a better brand of football more consistently and it wasn't just about superstars it was about a tactical brand of football, high tempo, different structure to many etc and the closest I've felt we were to winning a title since Bill Nic.

Even under Ozzie we played so beautiful football, just could not get the defence working though. beating Ipswich 3-1 comes to mind.

Harry Redknapp was a Charlatan, if he was that great, he would never have left QPR in so much shit, even then they was so lucky to get promoted in the first place, with the best squad in that division.
