Whilst I think we are having to seriously tighten our belt I think we could stretch to £20m or just over that I think the truth of the matter is that Levy is not prepared to pay £20m for Wilson. Someone else is and he will end up elsewhere. There's no way in a million years we can afford £20m, but if Wilson kicks up a fuss about coming to us instead of other clubs then we might be able to get him for £15m or less if we ship a couple of players out.
If a player of better quality than Wilson was available for £20million with a better resale value I have no doubt we would go that extra mile to find it.
The issue is, going for a back up striker you are not going to get much for £10-22m, you are either going to have to pay this amount for a mid to low table Premier League proven striker who doesn't pull up trees but manages to bag 8-10 goals a season whilst playing at the very least 30 games a season, e.g Deeney, Wilson, Wood, King et al or you are going to have to take a punt on someone completely unproven.
What Levy really means when he emphasises how difficult it is, is that he doesn't really want to pay any more thatn £12-£15m tops for a player that's either unproven or or one of the names we have mentioned.
If Jiminez or Ings or Antonio was available for £20m we'd pay it, Levy might try to lowball at £15m even for them but he'd pay £20m for them if push came to shove, they simply aren't available for that price. If Tammy Abraham or Mason Greenwood was available for £20m again Levy would haggle but pay it if forced to but again they aint. The truth is a proven 15 plus goal back up striker isn't available for £20m for the money we want to pay we either have to take a punt or we're getting a no frills bargain basement buy of the type that has been mentioned.
