Can anybody who booed Adebayor explain why they booed him?

That chant is definitely absolutely racist in my opinion. It's based on a collonialist stereotype that Africans have deplorable, humiliating, menial jobs. It doesn't have the same connotations if it were applied to Davies etc. Its embarrassing that our fans once sang it, and the idea that many of those very same fans are now booing him off the pitch makes me uneasy.

There's an increasing portion of our fan-base that I'm embarrassed to be associated with.

The only thing you have to go on Adebayor being booed is because he's black. By that logic, booing any black player is racist, regardless of anything else. Was the booing of Ghaly racist?

Do you really need reminding of why Adebayor isn't popular at the moment?

When we signed him, we already knew he'd been problematic at Arsenal, Man City and Monaco. Wherever Adebayor goes, trouble invariably follows him. After his excellent first season on loan, once he'd signed a contract he had an abysmal second season, which started with him turning up unfit because he'd had no preseason due to not signing unless he retained all of his £170k a week salary and culminated with that almost comedic penalty against Basel. The next season he was exiled from the team for, as ITK suggested, openly undermining the manager in front of the whole team because AVB had declined to adopt Adebayor's tactical suggestions in private. When Sherwood used him to prove a point for himself, he played well, albeit for only a couple of months whereafter, point 'proven' in the media, he reverted to type and was largely anonymous bar a couple of tap ins against Sunderland. Now this season we have the malcontents. Pochettino's team selections immediately following the ITK regarding this gives it plenty of credence, as none of the four players implicated were injured. Subsequently our form improved. All throughout his time at Spurs he has regularly been criticised for lack of effort, being lazy. He often has difficulty turning up on time after international duty, and not only with us.

But you knew all that anyway. Are any of those individually worthy of booing? Depending on your interpretation of the value of booing (and personally, I don't see any benefit in doing so), probably not. Cumulatively, considering he's been the highest paid player at the club ever since he joined but has only given one full good season, it's understandable why some people do. Some probably do so because he used to play for Arsenal, but then apart from a few idiots for the first few games no one booed Gallas.

As others have also said, that song wasn't really racist, just immature and a bit shit.

Good post, and the Gallas example is a brillant one. At the end of the day most fans will always appreciate effort and players giving their all. When we beat them 3-2 at the Emirates, Gallas was phenomenal that day - every Spurs fan respected him for that performance.

Adebayor isn't popular for a number of reasons, that have accumulated over time. That's the source of most people's frustration coupled with his obscene wages. Since signing permanently for us, he's actually done very little bar his purple patch under Sherwood which lasted a couple of months.

The song before did have racist connotations though IMO. It was a pretty vile song in all honesty and nobody deserves that, no matter their walk of like or past conduct.

But that's not the heart of the issue at the moment, its the booing. It makes us look petty and its not going to help him when he's in a Spurs shirt, or the team obviously, so its just totally counter productive.

Is it or is it not opposite year?

I'm getting confused here.

No you're not.

( @yankspurs - you see, Mustard said "I'm getting confused here" but seeing as it's supposed to be opposite year, I said "no you're not" because, y'know, that's implying that he's not confused...which is the opposite of what he was saying).

Everyone appreciated Gallas and Ade when they played well but as soon as they have one bad game they're back to hate figures because of their Arsenal connections. Soldado, Vertonghen, whoever can have a shed load of bad games before they're called into question but it's only one for Gallas/Ade so don't give me this bollocks that every Spurs fan respected him when it's clear they were just happy to win a NLD.

If you really think Ade is only getting booed because he played for the gooners, you haven't been paying attention

Could have been, he was hounded out the club, while Robbie Keane wasn't.

I don't think Adebayor thought that and I don't think the club thought that either otherwise they wouldn't have banned it.

I actually agree with the booers, I think a senior player not pulling his weight and making comments like he did in the media this week about why he is playing for the club, is more detrimental to the team than any person voicing their opinion by booing.

What the hell did he say?
