Our first four home games were against Sunderland, Aston Villa, Wigan and Hull. We took 1 point from those games.

Even with Campbelll, Bent and Pavlyuchenko (available for all but the first of those home games) as the strike force to choose from, and I accept that it’s a huge come down from Berbatov and Keane, the team, with any combination of 1 or 2 from those 3 to choose from up front, was far superior to all 4 of those sides. He can bemoan the failure to replace our two best players all he wants, but he had an improved midfield to choose from (still had all of Zokora, Jenas, Huddlestone and Lennon around, while he lost Steed but gained Modric). He had Dawson (young or not, had been in our first team for years), Woodgate and King to choose from at the back (and it was he who played King in Europe rather than the league), and he had Ekotto and Bale for one side, Corluka and Hutton for the other. Add to that the fact that we sold a player in Robinson who he didn’t fancy, and replaced him with a goalkeeper who had just had an outstanding season (including a great cup tie against us) in Gomes, and Ramos had all the ingredients available to him to at the very least take more than 1 point from 12 against sides all of whom are perennial mid table or below in the league for at least the past decade.

Sorry, no excuses. I loved our cup win, I loved how we did it and it stands out as one of my favourite moments in football, but there is just no excuse for losing 3 and drawing 1 of those 4 home games. None at all.
