CDM in the future and Dier

Just wanted to ask what everyone thought abut the CDM position, knowing we desperately tried to get one in last summer and when we failed we promoted Dier to this position. Does anyone feel we will try to get another one in at some point in the future? Or do you think this will become Dier's permanent position? Clearly we were looking for a bit more of an experienced player with more range and ability back in the summer but my question is, will we ever re-visit that or does Poch think Dier will grow into the position and mature even more and make it his own?

Obviously we don't know whats in Poch's head and Dier's for that matter but I cant help but wonder if Dier really will remain as the CDM for the long term. He looks like he is growing in the position and his defensive mind does give us that extra buffer but his lack of wide range of passing and abilities compared to a natural CDM are quite evident and I do tend to think it will take a long time - a few years in fact - before he really fits the CDM role as naturally and as well as more known players, such as a Morgan Shneiderlin or a Carrick. I'm not saying I want either of those but am just comparing them in their roles to Dier and asking myself will he get as good as them (Carrick in his prime) and if so how long before he gets to that level? Is it something Poch is willing to wait on and accept his limitations as he matures? Or does anyone think that role is still to be filled in the future? And if so where does that leave Dier at that point if it happens?

I almost feel that he's been pigeon-holed now that we have Toby at CB and Walker at RB as first choices. He'll be second fiddle to both of them if we do consider getting a more experienced CDM in the future and unless he makes the CDM role his own he will have no choice but to be benched.

I'm more than happy for him to continue as a DM. Although not as good on the ball as a Carrick or Schnerderlin, I think he's a better passer than he's given credit for and certainly better defensively than Carrick for example.

He is more of a Parker type than either of those two, but that's fine by me.

I'd prefer it if we concentrated on getting a proper back up to Toby or Vertonghen who can step in immediately (unlike Wimmer whom Poch clearly doesn't think is ready).

I think Dier has made the CDM position his own

wouldn't surprise me if we went in for another CDM, but if we do then i think it will be as backup for Dier and not as a replacement.

I actually think his passing range is very underrated, some of the passes he picks out at times are sublime, it's just that he knows when to play it simple and let someone else in a better position take over.

Has a better passing range that Makelele ever did, for instance.

He's made that position his own, and then some. Any additional CDM's should be backup to him.

Every centre half that has ever played for me over the years has been a frustrated forward ;) so Eric has just taken one step towards his goal haha

Joking aside he is coming on in that position in leaps and bounds it would be madness to rock that boat now he's a beast.

Great post - i thought his crossing towards the end of last year was superb at times and he is only going to get better as he is proving week in week out.

The more confident he gets the more he will try to express himself.

With Toby being so deadly with his long passes (8 accurate ones a game or something crazy like that) there isnt as much of an onus of Dier to play so many long either.

I remember Ledley playing practically a whole season at DCM even playing there for England. In fact I think it was playing in that position that he scored his 8 second goal.

He could well stay there but if not it'll be amazing experience which would help as a CD in the future

It will be a shame if we can't sort the situation out with Veljkovic. He seems exactly what we heed as cover/competition for Dier, and he's already at the club.

Eh?

Bentaleb, Mason, Dembele, Alli, Toby - they can all play CDM. So why is there any need for back-up?

Out of that lot, only Alderweireld has a defensive mindset. Having a defensively minded player like Dier has made us a very robust unit, unlike last season when we were a shambles defensively. Alderweireld is part of the solution, but Dier is a bigger part IMO.

We're talking about back-up though aren't we? My point is, there's plenty of options for cover and hunger for a place in the team for the sake of a couple of games rather than going looking for another signing.

Often looks like that. We had KWP, Smith and Fredericks in our hands, but we prefered Trippier. Then we added Clinton N'Jie. He might come good but the way we use him now we could have given his place directly to Oduwa. You can't rely on youngsters only and need to take a risk at times and buy from elsewhere. But we should look to bring in supertalent (Alli) or real quality (Alderweireld, Son) before adding Stamboulis and Fazios for the sake of it.

Veljkovic can play CB or DMF, exactly the same as Dier. Oduwa doesn't (at least, not what I've seen of him).

We've recently lost players like Walker for a whole season. If Dier gets a bad injury we're right back in the defensive shambles we were last year. I'd like us to sort Veljkovic out.
