you can't just buy another player for one match. maybe bring back gallas on a short-term deal if we're really short.

agree, if we get another one in and then everyone is fit then we are back to 5 CB's
Unless we have a real concern over one of our CB's fitness this season then 1 should do.

This would give AVB the 4 CB's that he wanted

A player who has played in the Premiership is always preferable. Maybe someone like Coloccini?

Ashley Williams at Swansea had a good season last year. I would think that if there were any serious doubts about Kabouls recovery though, we would have a) brought somebody in by now and b) not sold Caulker. I think we still may get Vlad though but it will be risky pitching him straight into the Prem.

The hype is from people who don't necessarily understand defending.

He does what Terry has been doing in recent years and what Carragher did, too. Looks good in the highlights but when you see it over a whole game you spot the problems.

He makes great last ditch blocks and challenges. WOW, a committed defender who stopped a near-certain goal!!

Except the chance came about because he was out of position or too slow in the first place. That extra second it takes for the striker to set up a shot is enough to make a covering challenge, but if the defender was 1 second faster in reading the play then the chance is snuffed out further up the field.

Terry had Carvalho covering his mistakes for a long time. When AVB wanted to move the line up a bit, Terry was one of those who couldn't adapt because he likes the contact and likes to see the whole game in front of him - basically likes to be the hero.

I'd bid 8 million plus add ons for Sakho from PSG I think he would be a beast in the prem.

Loris would have a good relationship with him as he is a french international and communication between the two would not be an issue at the back. Would also help him settle in and feel more at home with his countries captain around the club.

I really want Stefan de Vrij out of Feynoord. He was rumoured with us during the winter and I would hope that the interest could be renewed. I think he'd fit exactly what AVB is looking for in a CB who can play the hogh line and I could easily see him being the future partner for Vertonghen.

If only we had a promising, up and coming centre half to call upon, one who'd been at the club through the youth system, had say, 2 years premiership football under his belt and been capped at U21 and full international level. Preferably British...

OR perhaps if we had nine million to spend on a CB whose two only attributes aren't just being big and British!

Aleksandar Philipovic was really good next to our own Milos Velkjovic for the Serbian side that won the Euro U19s last week. Velkjovic had a very decent tournament but Philipovic was phenomenal with many last ditch tackles and blocks. He's a year older than Velkjovic and it showed because he was much more positionally aware and didn't give away silly free kicks. He'd be cheap as chips too but is more of a prospect than an immediate solution.

Is Vertonghen in light training? In the bale euphoria last week it was him they interviewed leaving the training ground.

If we're gonna spend £8-10m on the Romanian dude I'd rather we spend that money on someone with Prem experience.

Jagielka perhaps?

yep, I still do not understand that sale and no one has been able to explain the utility of that move sensibly either...

would you take jagielka over vertonghen? sometimes it's worth the "risk" of going for the less proven option.

We could do worse than to sign someone of the Jagielka/Richards/Lescott ilk tbh.
