Strange reason for sacking someone....

Charlton Athletic have confirmed the sacking of manager Chris Powell with immediate effect.
Belgian owner Roland Duchatelet had held talks with Powell about a new contract, but decided to end his three-year spell at the Valley as they could not agree on how to take the club forward.
Sky Sports understand that Duchatelet has lined up fellow countryman Jose Riga - who he knows from his days as manager of his other club Standard Liege - as a replacement, and the technical director of AC Milan's academy has already arrived at the club's training ground.
"We have been working with Chris Powell and his representatives for a couple of weeks to try and agree a contract extension which would have seen us continue to work together," said Duchatelet.
"There was good progress, but we could not reach an agreement over the club's football strategy going forward. The situation put a strain on the working relationship between Chris and the board. Therefore I think it is best for all parties that we part ways at this stage."

"The situation put a strain on the working relationship between Chris and the board. Therefore I think it is best for all parties that we part ways at this stage.
"I would like to thank Chris for his commitment and hard work over the past three years. The club enjoyed a number of good times under his leadership.
"However, given the club's position in the league and the number of important fixtures upcoming, I felt this difficult decision was unavoidable at this time.
"We will look to quickly appoint a replacement who we feel will give us the best chance of avoiding relegation from the Championship.
"I can assure supporters this was not an easy decision, but it has been made with the club's future in mind. Time will tell if it is the right decision."
The Addicks face a battle for survival in the closing weeks of the campaign and endured fresh disappointment on Sunday after League 1 Sheffield United denied them a Wembley trip with a 2-0 defeat in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Absolutely bizarre that they couldn't wait until the end of the season when they're in the position they're in. Four points from safety but with four games in hand due to the cup and postponements.

I would've had more faith in Powell keeping them up than a new manager who needs to get to know the squad.

I think you'll find that the only reason for this is racism*

*if you ask Sol Campbell

He's going to be on Talksport tomorrow morning, on the Colin Murray show as a guest, so that should be entertaining.

On topic though, those talks broke down rapidly - i actually thought he'd already signed a new contract, evidently not. Mad idea though, i'd like to know what part they disagreed on to that degree that it required them to part company though. As far as i was aware, and not being a follower of them i might be wrong, Charlton had been doing reasonably well considering they have no money and no wages to spend, so i can't see them telling him he needs to spend even less - he's not spent any at all. If i was in charge i think i might've trusted Powell as he hasn't really cocked up so far.

From what I could see he was working miracles on a very tight budget after their best player (Kermongant) was sold behind his back. I still reckon it's cos he is black.

They didn't waste their time, as expected.

Jose Riga is appointed head coach of Championship side Charlton Athletic.

The Belgian-born former Standard Liege boss will take charge of his first game on Wednesday against Huddersfield Town at The Valley.

Riga took Liege to the last 16 of the Europa League in the 2011-12 season, winning their group before eventually being knocked out of the competition by Hannover 96 over two legs. Riga will work alongside Karel Fraeye, who joins as assistant head coach.

This will either be fantastic or a complete disaster for them. Still think it was a weird move even if the Chairman has got his man.

Liked Chris Powell and as far as I know the Charlton fan base were behind him. Very strange decision. Brought Charlton back up last year and finished very near the play-offs...few weird transfers away in the January transfer window, i.e. Yann Kermogant. Riga looks like a solid replacement, though.

i guess the manager and owner didn't see eye to eye... could have wait for the end of the season, next few games for Charlton are pretty important, still got a chance to save themselves.

interesting to watch them in next few weeks.

This one leaves a nasty taste in the mouth, they had four games inland and I'm sure Powell would have kept them up and I can't see that happening now. Powell is a talented manager who has done a great job there.

Unlike Sol, Powell has actually been putting the work in and I hope his career doesn't take a hit because the owner wants Chartlon to be a feeder club for Standard Liege (which is farcical in itself).

So they appointed the former Standard Liege boss, don't the owners of Charlton also own Standard Liege? Could be wrong but I'm sure I heard something like that.

Don't get this trend of replacing British managers with managers from the continent. It hasn't worked particularly well for West Brom, Cardiff and Middlesbrough and I have my doubts as to whether it'll work for Charlton.

It does seem that Charlton is destined to become a feeder club, which is a shame as I rather like the club and their fans.

New owner who has already started moving his own players into the club, now wants his own manager.

One of the SSN guys - the ex Blue Peter one - tweeted earlier that Powell was offered a new contract last week, signed it and returned it, then received it back from the owner unsigned with a note saying he's fired. Classy.

Not sure if srs, but you probably read it in the OP of this thread...

They were saying this in the crowd last night as well.

Personally I think this spells a long and difficult couple of years for them.

That's terrible if true.

Powell will get another job, I'm sure. Expect to see him back in the dugout at the start of next season.
